Just returned from South Dakota - Roscoe area. 4 of the six dogs are sick. Symptoms: not eating or eating little dog food, eating grass and vomiting, lethargic, will drink water. Haven't been able to identify something that the four got into that the other two didn't. One sick dog joined the hunt the 3rd/last day. No ponds the 3rd day. First dog started showing signs morning of last day. Other dogs later in the day and next day. 3 golden retrievers and a British lab. Will be taking my 2 goldens in to vet this morning.

Did they happen to catch, carry or kill any cottontails, mouse, voles, etc?My pup brought me a dying rabbit a couple months ago and was sick within 48 hours with tularemia. Any jaundice symptoms? usually it tapers off after a couple good freezes, but maybe that area hasn't had hard freezes yet? She pulled out of it the night before I was scheduled to take her in. One dog may have been exposed and spread it to others. I had to make some food out of burger, eggs, green beans, carrots, etc . Then I was able to get her to eat and she pulled out of it quick. Just a thought based on a disease that was epidemic out here in the West a short time ago.

Hunted NE SD started on 24th on 26th partners brit started throwing up. Next day he was better and eating. Got home on 28th and on30th my lab had same sickness lasted one day and ate better the next day. One day of rain but rest of week was to warm hunting only 2to 3 hrs. Early. I talked to a sled dog guy and he say virus at times will go through all his dog 50+ watch for dehydration.

Are they running a fever, how is there gum color?

Gum color looked normal, didn't take temp as was same symptoms as our other dog. Mine was going to vet next morning, when i checked her in morning she was much better but didnt eat much till next day. Symptoms were same as top post.

Follow-up

Dogs' blood and stool tests came out negative. Vets from different offices looked at separate dogs (separate owners). Their respective reviews were the same. They believed that the dogs picked up some kind of virus. Their suggestion is to wait it out and keep close tabs on them. One of my dogs is on the mend. My older dog, Blake, (8 years) is having a tougher time with it. He did get a penicillin shot. Vomiting through yesterday (4th day), but drinking better. Another dog (separate owner and vet) received antibiotics, pain pills and an anti-vomiting prescription. Started boiled chicken and rice diet for Blake. He is eating it better. Keeping it to small quantities. There was a comment on rabbits earlier. One shelter belt had rabbits all over it and the dogs all over them. Wonder if that was it? No common food or water source while on the hunt. Feel bad for Blake - wish I could understand "dog" language so he could tell me what's up.

Heat

Pondered the heat question. First day was 50. Our second day was on the warm side. The third and last was 40's and rain. One dog that did get sick didn't join until the third and coldest day.

Same symptoms my pup had, other than she also had muscular discomfort. Same time frame as far as how long it took before starting to eat/drink again. Tularemia is highly contagious, that's why we don't hunt rabbits in warm weather. The experts recommend if you come across a dead/dying rabbit, use gloves to handle it (if you need to handle it at all), put in zip lock bag, then inside another zip lock, then triple wash your hands. Mice, voles, etc can have the same disease. I noticed the rabbits in my yard stopped dying, (they were dying by the bunches, my neighbor thought my dogs were killing them all, but they just give rabbits a free ride to me, then I let them go) about 3-4 weeks ago after a couple hard frosts. If the dogs are otherwise healthy, they will pull out of it, (if it is tularemia). They can't resist the boiled chicken and rice, so that will help a lot. oh ya, humans get it, too and can make you very ill. Good Luck
