Shotshell Ammo Prices

I've been watching trends in ammo availability and pricing in my sector of the Midwest, and it's frustrating to see prices on some ammunition (like .223/5,56 and 9mm)
start to come down--example 124 grain 9mm can be had for $14.99 if one shops around---but 12 and 20 gauge target shells are still mostly $9.57 (WalMart) to $12.99 per box of 25 and I don't see them coming down soon. And of course the specialty shells like premium steel, Hevi-shot, Bismuth etc. are staying ridiculously high.
I wonder when shotgun shooters can expect relief. I don't expect prices to be $4.99/box again but some moderation is surely in order.

I hear you neighbor, I went ahead and bought a few Federal 100 pack 20's when Wallyworld finally started getting them back in stock. I've been checking every week. Ammo seek Noble 20s have dropped a couple cents a round the last few weeks but I'm done buying for the summer as a lot of folks are. So, I'm hoping the lower demand will help.

Forget where the email was from but saw many target options for 7.99 this week come through. Those are the best I’ve seen. Hopefully they continue to move down. I also think the days of $50 cases are long gone but hopefully at least get to the 60’s. I have 40 plus cases left all bought pre pandemic but using them up so at some point will need to replace them.

HOLY SMOKES!!
Got sick of prices always going up a little each year so just made the decision was gonna stock up so I did many years ago. Could have easily doubled my money with pandemic prices but knew I’d have to replace so I didn’t. Been nice to be able to go shoot this whole time and not have to pay the super high prices. Don’t shoot as much as I used to so this stock pile will last for a bit.

Gary's Guns in Sioux Falls had flats of Fedral Top Gun for $70 over Memorial Day weekend. The Scheels store in Sioux City has two brands of target shells on sale for $6.99 per box. I hope the trend continues to come down. I don't enjoy going to Walmart, but I've been buying the 100 round boxes there since they found there way back to tye shelves.

Holy moly, N ow we know where all the toilet paper went. ;)

The ammo I primarily use for pheasant hunting has been difficult to find for 3+ seasons now. Its also gone up in price too. Never used to have this problem before 2020, and I've been pheasant hunting for almost 25 years.

I looked at some Federal #3 20 gauge "Meateater" ammo at my local hardware/gun shop this morning...$52 for 25 shells! Even Browning 12 gauge "Wicked Blend #2 and #4 is $29/box of 25. And they did have 12 gauge Prairie Storm--for $33 per box of 25. I have to agree with nasty--don't pass up any decent ammo deals you see, even if you don't necessarily have to have it. You never know when someone will come up with legislation to make it even more expensive and difficult to obtain. These present prices are criminal.

I bought 16 gauge, 2 3/4” lead 5 shot @ 1300 fps for $15.98, fiocchi, out in SD…gas station…decent price, probably $5 more a year or two ago…maybe more

Buds online has Winchester super x hi brass for 14 a box. Those patterned amazing in a gun I sold, should see if they do in any of my current and stock up. I did finally find some Golden Pheasant 3 inch 5’s in 20 gauge. Been a LONG time since I have found those. 22 bucks at Scheels-not horrible.

Super x in 20 gauge 1 oz 6 and 71/2 is a fantastic load. Through my gun it performs excellent and I’m currently buying all I can get away with.

Prices are slowly drifting down - before the pandemic you could buy Herters brand at Cabelas sale prices - 2 3/4” pheasant loads - 12&20 gauge - for around $6 -
Recently scored on a couple really good deals on pheasant loads and TSS turkey loads - so as supply continues to improve - we should see more price relief - as stated - prices have been ridiculous
I’m not a pistol shooter - but have friends that enjoy it - during the pandemic, I’m told prices were in the .60 cent/round range & now that ammo can be found under .25
With all the baked in inflation over the past two years, I can’t imagine ever seeing pre-pandemic prices again

When in Walmarts, various towns, I eyeball inventories…regardless of prices, there’s ALOT more in stock…first ingredient for prices to drop, which they have been, to a degree…seems like trap loads are well, well below $10/box in 12 gauge…20 maybe slightly below?

If the war in Ukraine gets any hotter, we are likely to see even higher prices, if we can find ammo at all. For about 3 years during Vietnam, we could not even find 12g 1 1/4 any size shot. This was in both Sandusky & Toledo, Ohio. About 4 months after Nixon got sworn in as potus, voila - all of a sudden you could buy it at any local hardware store, Penneys, Sears, Montgomery Ward, Kmart, all had plenty of it. My local hardware store owner said none of what he got was made in 1969, & he got cases of it.
