Shotgun without rib

I think on a gun like a vintage Sweet Sixteen it's really more of a personal preference. There are those Sweet Sixteen owners that actually prefer the plain barrel as it makes for a lighter gun. I think most of us have gotten so use to shooting guns with vent ribs that a gun without a rib looks strange. The first few shotguns I had did not have ribs and they shot just fine.

It shouldn't matter if you're looking at and pointing at the bird rather than aiming down the barrel like you're supposed to do. I don't have any guns without ribs, but I do remove the beads from most of my guns so I don't have anything to draw my attention away from the bird. Go for it!

In the heat of the moment at flush, do you think the absence of a rib is going to matter? ;)

I shot a lot of guns without a rib before I ever got the fancy one with a rib. Many shoot the plain barrel gun better. Nothing wrong with a nice Sweet Sixteen with a plain barrel.

My first shotgun was an old Winchester 1200 without a rib. It will be the first shotgun my sons shoots too...

on the older guns it was an upgrade that most frugal family men wouldnt pay for. i think manufacturing processes have made them (ribs) cheaper.
or everybody is less frugal nowadays.
seems like vent ribs were on the "skeet" model, which usually cost more
it'll be fine

I don't base any purchase of a shotgun on whether it has a rib or not. When I"m shooting a moving target, I'm looking at the target, not at the top of the barrel.

My favorite are the 40's and early 50's corncob fore-end Ithaca 37's.
