"Severe" Testicle Problem...

The title says it all. I'll lay out what has happened over the last few days so that any background leading into this might help someone give me a better answer.

My dog is an 18 month black lab. He is from a reputable breeder and trained professionally.

Last week, we took a trip with an RV to Deadwood, SD for a marathon and then to Pike's Peak for the rest of our vacation. We live at 1000' elevation so the reason I mention this is because I don't know if the altitude of PP could have anything to do with this.

We returned from our trip on thursday morning at 2:00am. The dog has been fine since then until he pooped in his cage this morning at about 3:00am. I don't know if this is related because the wife was in a hurry for me to get to bed last night :)D) so I didn't give him as much time outside as I normally would. He was wimpering at around 3:00 and I couldn't get to him (didn't want to wake up) and he pooped a little in his kennel before I could get him outside. My wife cleaned up the inside of the cage (not 100% because it was 3:00am).

When she woke up at about 9:00am and went to clean out the dog cage she noticed that the dogs testicles were huge, HUGE. She took him to the vet and the vet used the word "severe" swelling. They put him on Cephalexin and Carprofen, one is an anti-inflammatory and the other is an anti-biotic. The plan right now is to see how his "boys" do early during this coming week. If they don't seem to be improving rapidly the vet is talking about....gasp....neutering him.

I'm posting this not to discuss the pros/cons of neutering him but to find out if someone has experienced something similar? Is there something we/vet are missing?

Please help!

It could just be an infection which in intestified in lower regions in the bladder tract.the use of Cipro, would further the suggestion that it is a e-coli tract infection, could be some bloody urine for a while. If it gets better on cipro it will get better fast. It if it doesn't, I look for some torsion problem, could be a gut torsion. There is not a lot of time. It always looks worse for a day or two, use excercise, don't let lay around, with no movement. Good luck.

What do you mean "there is not a lot of time"? Does that mean for it to get better or worse?

I would expect it to get better before the 10 day course? of the antibotic. swelling might take some time to subside, if you see any patholigical behavior, or physical symptoms inquire immediately. I sure the Dr. had the same advice. Torsion needs immediate attention has inability to ability to find a comfortable position. But sure looks lie a food,or water infection, drinking in infected water,"beaver fever", algae, exhausted by travel? maybe and lack of the routine of excercise. This is the season for it. Younger dogs are more prone.

What does that sentence mean? When we were on vacation, he did drink out of a few puddles before I was able to stop him.
