Second season start

Took the 2 Britts out about 3 today to the local game lands for a second season pheasant hunt. About 6" of crusted snow on the ground. 15 minutes into the field both dogs lock-up in a very heavy fence row, as I move in on the dogs I saw the rooster sneaking ahead of them in the fence row, the dogs move ahead and relocated about 20 yards ahead. I followed up and the rooster took off out the other side and I drop him with the first shot. Ruby my older female made a nice retrieve. Moved on and the both dogs locked up again this time it was a hen. Moved 3 more birds until about 4:15 and did not shoot at any of the rooster. Figured I would save them for the dogs to have some fun at a later date. One bird in the bag is all I need to keep me happy. Great hunt for the first day of the second season.

Sounds great! Glad to hear you are still able to find some birds. I hope to get out over the next few days and I'll take a bird if I get a chance. But I think I'll stop taking birds after this week.

That's a very good hunt this time of year for Ringnecks.

Sorry, I don't know about Adams County.

I think Saturday is going to be a mess, with all the melting snow, but it is what it is!

Check out my pictures from the season continues part II. They are from Adams county.

There is a crust on top of the snow which makes things difficult for the dogs. It was hard for them to cover ground in fields of switchgrass since it was bent over with snow and ice on top of it. Today should soften some of the snow and ice up with temps getting to 47. The low tonight is to be 35 so it shouldn't freeze back up. I think you will be OK for Friday for the most part.

I was out today and the snow was much better and the dogs were able to cover ground better. Good luck.

Getting out on Friday

Plan to get out the last couple of hours on Friday, like this time of year not much hunting pressure. Grouse hunting in Center County between x-mas and New Year.

You're right, there's almost no pressure at all where I hunt this time of year, and where I hunt grouse in Bradford County I'm sure I'll be the only one hunting the area.
Good luck!

Hunting in Bradford County

Hunted for many years in Bradford County around Towanda, do you move many birds. I average about 2 flushes per hour in Center, which is a little about the State norm.

Up until the last couple of years we did very well in BC . It is still decent, but you have to put in a lot of miles for your birds, which is ok!

Grouse Hunting

Because the shooting is usually a little less productive for Grouse covering ground is the answer, every now and then I will get a hot streak and harvest 3to4 birds straight and miss the next 5 or 6. That's grouse hunting! Was out for phez yesterday, managed to put 1 rooster in the bag. Birds held good for the dogs, had other chances but let them fly for another day. The birds were feeding in the fence rows, on berries.
