SD opening day- Tom Brokaw report

Wow. I'm about 1/4 way through the video. There were a few moments I felt like I was back in SD. They really did a nice job.

Well done to all those who put this together. Thank you.

I have to add---around 34:30 of the video--I had to laugh a bit. Been there all too many times. Usually ends with a tackle and bruised knees. lol

I watched this video yesterday and could feel Brokaw's energy for South Dakota.

Had to chuckle about the two-yr. "professionaly trained" lab that didn't retrieve a bird. The trainer was a bit sheepish and indicated the dog needed more work; wonder if the trainer continued to have new clients after this video?

Tom was able to hunt some of the finest pheasant camps in the state - Paul Nelson's facility is only $6K for three day's! Wonder what Ted Turner charges?

Good video and well worth a review.

Jon,

I think maybe we should go where there is a harp playing while I eat:eek:. Not my kind of place. Btw it was 6800 for the weekend. But who cares about 800 bucks if you are spending that much.

I loved the looks of the trainers lab, but it didn't seem to have much drive. I would have been a little disappointed. Brokaws dog seemed to be the best of the bunch.

Tom,

Would agree regards Brokaw's Lab - a bit slow, but he did retrieve a bird or two.Why would you offer your young dog for a video when it's unproven? I think Brokaw should contact us for the next film!

You hunted with Max when he was 1 and I think he held his own, as does Buddy!
There isn't a better dog marking birds than Buddy...

Let's introduce the harp idea to some of the restaurants! I know George will go for it!

I am sure George would like the harp idea. He kinda rolls like that a little. I appreciate the words on buddy. As he matures I can see how much my effort has paid off in him. It goes to show that a bumbling ameteur trainer like myself can take a good dog and not screw him up too bad. Sometimes I wish he had the opportunity to hunt more, it seems to suit him. I talked my wife into allowing me to make the front third of our property crp grass. He got a ton of marking work in there. I need to rework this spring as it is getting a little gnarly.

Now I want a harp playing at the next meal I take in pheasant country. I did not know what I was missing and, to tell the truth, just how low class I am. LOL. Kidding aside, that type of hunting does not appeal. It rilly ain't huntin', see? :p

I assume the video was co-promoted by Cabela's, they received lots of camera work and strokes.

Next time they'll use a drone to capture the hunting!

Additional note: "nelson farms" is a preserve and uses pen birds...

No doubt on Nelson's. I would imagine they put out a ton of birds. For 6800 bucks there better be a bunch of birds. As far as steakhouses go, I would put mad Mary's in Pierre up against anywhere. Sure isn't any in murdo. That is one drawback of hunting there, crappy food. I cook a pretty mean steak, maybe I could talk my wife into moving to murdo.........yea then I woke up.

Tom, if you are a single hunter here's the price: $7595 for three day's, plus $380 for SD tax. Almost $2700 per day. I think I'm going to sign up...

Guess we could bring our own steaks and bbq in the parking lot. Wonder if you can play the harp outside??

Nelson's was in tax court recently; SD wanted to charge them $29K in back sales taxes on food and ammo. The state lost...

No harp? No huntin'. Period. End of story.

lol....if you could see some of the places I've stayed in Sd you'd feel more "high class".

My last trip to SD, I was welcomed into bed by a spider doing his best to bite me:eek:

Lol. I thought I was high class at that hotel in St. Pierre that had a strict "no cooking bacon in the room" rule.:D

Tell me you're making that up. It's common place to see sings in the rooms "no cleaning pheasants in bathtubs/showers" but the bacon thing is a new one. lol

Nick

How could I make that up Nick lol. There was a $500 charge for anyone found breaking said bacon rule too. I should have asked about the storey behind it, I'm sure it was a good one.:D

LOL.....That's too much.

If word ever got out that guests can wake up to the smell of someone cooking bacon each morning they'd probably see a sizable jump in business.:D

One year a buddy and I brought along a grinder and a food dehydrator on an early season trip. Every night at the hotel we would make Jerky that we were eating and giving away to farmer friends. We got a lot of sideways glances from our neighbors. If you've ever made Jerky in a hotel room....you might be a redneck.

Yeah that's always a good thing to do in a garage not a hotel room. lol
