Salem/Howard areas

I was up near Howard opening weekend and then again thanksgiving weekend and did really well. It seemed when talking to people that you either were into them or you were plain skunked. Now that's just talking to people and there is of course A LOT of factors why someone would struggle, but that's what I heard. Again, I couldn't have done any better so I'll recommend that area. Best of luck.

Has anyone one hunted the Salem or Howard area, if so, how where the bird numbers?

spoke to a friend today who was a guest at a hunting camp that owns about 3k acres right in that area...they don't have all that ground in habitat, but a good amount is....bottom line, they are killing about 1/3 of what they normally would looking back over the past decade...the hunt my friend was on produced about 1.5 birds per hunter per day...i hunt west of howard and I would say it is a bit better than last year but not by much...way down from 3, 4, 5 years ago...lots of habitat has been lost...still fun, still birds if you are willing to work...I returned last night from extreme NW ND...wow...what a contrast as far as habitat, and also, birds..go figure...habitat = birds! blinding flash of the obvious!!!!! Montana was very impressive as well that way...

Thanks for the info guys. It sounds like there are more birds around there than around here. My brother in law and his son in law were thinking of doing some pheasant hunting when they come to South Dakota but won't have much time so travel will be limited.
