Roadside Count

The DNR started their pheasant count. They are predicting a 40% increase in population from last year based on the weather conditions from the winter and spring. They thought the survey might not accurately reflect the actual numbers due to the hot dry conditions. There should be more birds than last which is good news. I have seen more little ones than last year.

You got nothing to worry about your moving to the Iowa pheasant meca. I predict low # of birds. I have not seen any broods yet.

Didn't know Iowa had a "pheasant mecca ". Good for a chuckle.:

Exactly BC! I wouldn't expect the #'s to come out as great as they are predicting. They sure may be up that much but I don't think the counts are going to reflect that due to the data being skewed by the drought IMO.

Just checking in here as Fall has to be in the air some time soon, I hope anyway. I read the DNR road counts like the rest of you but thought I would share some of my own observations. I have not been out on foot scouting yet, but will shortly. My observations are all pretty much from my own "roadside counts" driven in my old Jeep.

I have seen more birds in southern Iowa this year than I have seen in the 15 years or so that I have been hanging out down there. I have seen exceptional numbers, relative to previous years, from simply driving gravel very early and very late. I have seen decent broods, early and late, and more roosters than I have seen in years previous combined. Very exciting.

I have not driven much at all in central Iowa where I usually do most of my hunting, within an hour or two of DSM, but if the numbers are what they are in southern Iowa I have to guess they will be pretty nice in central Iowa as well.

I hope you guys (and gals) have been seeing good numbers as well and hope you all have a great season! Keep the reports coming.

New numbers out just this morning . . . Iowa up 16% statewide compared to last year, but some regions (SW and suprisingly, W) dragging that number down quite a bit. In talking with my DNR reps, they add poor dew conditions likely kept counts low as well.

Based on my own observations, and what I hear from my 40+ farmer buddies all over the state, we're looking at significant improvement over last year.

Opening Weekend will be crazy, with (I imagine) all crops out, 50% of CRP mowed, etc.

Let's face it. We had a great spring-summer of weather for pheasants!:) Anything is better than last year. It will take several years of this weather to see noticeable increases-imo. That said, I like all of you am increasing in excitement for that crisp fall morning to arrive we call "the opener". This will be my 49 consecutive year and I assure you I will have the same chill as when I was a six year old.

What we share is a common love of a bird and what it brings to our hearts/souls each fall. I think about and try to assist them year round. We will see more birds this fall and I have no doubt some increase in our success. Last year proved to this bird hunter that the "joy" cannot be eliminated by empty vests, few flushes or a series of "no" when knocking on doors. I have accepted that I will never know why I love it so much.

I wish to energize our land owners and legislature to put their joy into our habitat sign-up and restoration. We can do it together--no single component of our pheasant recovery will be able to do it alone. My single hen did produce a brood on the family land this spring. It should have happened elsewhere as well. The end of October is near!:)

Now that friends...is a great Post!

Didn't check survey this year to see how S E Iowa fared. Wouldn't mind being pheasantly surprised. More than likely heading down to property for opener, hang with neighbors, do some:cheers:, and run the dogs. Be a good time regardless. Fall is always a special time of year, usually celebrate the harvest:confused:...if there is anything left to harvest. Maybe hook up with C-fan.

I love your attitude and thinking!:)

my roadside count today was 2 dead roosters... dang..

Moment of silence, please...:( On a positive note, neighbor out in Iowa mowing kicked up two large coveys of quail! Sounding better for 27th!
