Retreiver guy at a Spaniel Test

Now that the AKC is allowing retreivers to run spanial tests i have been toying with running my 2 year old fire breathing Lab. So today I went and watched a spaniel test being ran near my home. I was really impressed with the quality of the Master level dogs. I have some work to do on quartering but otherwise I think Dutch can do master level work. I was a bit concerned the spanial people might look down on retrievers being allowed to run, but their reaction was just the opposit. They welcomed me with advice, and a darn good lunch of very fresh grilled chucker. So after we run the Minnesota Master National in a couple weeks I am turning one of my Labs into a ESS

Anyone else thinking of giving spanial tests a go?

Would a spaniel test MH show up different on a pedigree than a retriever MH?

Great question! I have no idea!
I better get the spanial Master title to find out.... Actually I am not even sure if a retreiver can title, they may only be able to run but not accrue qualifying scores.

That may be true. I know airedales can run and title in spaniel tests. Good luck out there, spaniel people for the most part are pretty cool and its nice to see them getting more people involved. I went to watch a test last year (the fact that they held it at a good quail spot helped persuade me) and saw some nice dogs. A pheasant flew out east (over the air out area for the dogs) about 400yds and dropped stone dead so I went and got my dog and took him about 100yds down wind of the bird, gave him a line and sent him out for the bird. One guy was really impressed and asked when my "big boy" as he said was running. I told him we were just there to watch and hunt some quail which was met by a bewildered look lol. Really nice guy though and nice "little" dogs.

Hey QH! it's been quite a while. Not to sidetrack the thread, but it doesn't seem that too many field trial dogs actually get run as bird dogs. Maybe more HT dogs do, but seemed like majority of the HT folks also ran trials. Personally, I think it would be great to see a lab out there running.
