Resident Only Season

How has everyone been doing in the Resident Only season thus far? Five of us hunted the same Game Production Area Saturday and today and got our limit both days. A lot of young birds.

These were the first pheasant hunts for my 10 month old Brittany. I did have her out sharptail hunting four times but the sharpies were few and far between. It is amazing to watch a young dog progress each day. Almost minute to minute. The natural abilities start to take over and they are figuring things out as we walk through a field. She made several nice points and retrieved several nearly to hand, dropping them 5-6 feet short of me. Most impressive was the last walk. One of the guys had just shot our final bird and we are several hundred yards from the road. I saw her pick up a scent and start following what was obviously a running bird. She tracked it for nearly 200 yards before going on point. It ended up being a hen but that didn't matter as it was how she handled that bird that made me proud. It's going to be a great year! :)

Dakotazeb,

Sounds like it was a good time. Thanks for the report.

We've limited out in the same spot the last 3 years. And, NO, I'm not going to tell anyone where it's at. :)

I'm going to try getting out this afternoon by myself for a couple hours if it would quite snowing. Going to a Walk-In area I hunt once in a while. Probably got hunted hard this weekend but I doubt anyone is out there today.

That is exciting! Always tough decision for me to know when to hold the dog or let it go. When I was young I always let the dog go.:)

I let her go as she wasn't moving that fast and was always within gun range.

I forgot how much fun it was watching a young dog figure things out. Yesterday I dropped a rooster in some tall slough grass. I wasn't 100% sure where it went down but I got both dogs over in the area and gave the "Dead Bird" command. Of course the youngster doesn't know that command yet but my 6 year old Britt does. When I got the the area I thought the bird went down there was knee deep water but it opened up a little. I'll be darned, the pup got out in that water, scented that rooster by a small clump of weeds and submerged in the water. She found it and brought it back to me. Yes, I was one proud papa!!

Different story with my 1.5 old lab, she can literal fly. Takes jumps of 10 feet without any effort.

Have notice young dog hunts with head up more than I would like. Because of her small size keeps head up to see where going. Toward end of day she did better, but probably because tired.
