Remington 1100 magnum.. issues

Ok so I have a Remington 1100 magnum with a 30 inch fixed mod barrel.

This gun being that it is the magnum receiver doesn’t want to cycle 2 3/4 loads. Some guys on the internet have no issues cycling them. Some guys have the same issue I am.

I have read that you can open the gas port a tiny bit with a drill bit but then will 3 inch loads be to much?

This gun was passed down by my godfather who died so I want to be using it so bad. But I have no reason other then skeet or pheasant . I don’t want to bring it near the salt water hear for ducks and destroy it.

What’s everyone’s thoughts ? I have tried heavy pheasant loads

I think your best solution is to buy a standard 1100 12 ga. barrel for 2 3/4" shells. The receivers are the same on the Magnum and non-Mag so a standard 12 ga. barrel will work and allow you to shoot lighter loads. There are a lot of used 1100 barrels on eBay. Some with vent rib and some without. Just make sure you don't buy one that is for an 1187. By getting a different barrel you can find a 26" or 28" in IC or Mod. which would be a better choice for sheet or pheasants.

There are also some 1100 barrels on GunBroker.com Probably going to set you back $200-300 but will give you a much more serviceable shotgun. Good luck.

Changing the barrel should make no difference. See a real gunsmith.
What do you mean "no difference"? It certainly will changing to a standard 2 3/4" barrel. You will be able to shoot non-magnum shells. The standard barrel has two gas ports, the 3" magnum barrel only has one.

Here's a nice 26" vent rib barrel choked Skeet. That choke would be fine for pheasants also.

Or here's another 26" choked IC

I live in a liberal state. Won’t ship
Where do you live? It shouldn't matter to just ship a barrel but you should still be able to have it shipped to FFL in your area.

How does your mag tube look? Rusting/pitting on the mag tube causing the gas check to not seal properly is the main reason for poor cycling on these. Have had that issue myself. Not much you can do about it, if this is the case.

You could try a new gas check/seal but the new style are pretty bad compared to the old UFO style. And its almost impossible to find good condition old stock anymore.

Id personally just shoot mag 2.75 loads out of it and enjoy using the gun. 1 3/8 1300 or so loads will cycle just fine i bet. Yeah you cant use that at the trap range, but theres not many 1100 mag that cycle trap loads well to begin with.
