Redfish and Flounder to Pheasant

Thank you all for your comments and suggestions. I am looking forward to heading out that way and will leave the shotgun be for the time being. Probably going to do some shooting with it and if it sucks (or better yet if I suck) I'll just buy another one. Been investigation BLM land and the recommended dogs you guys have suggested. Also been youtubing some Chukar, pheasant and other bird hunting out west. Getting pretty riled up about it. If anyone has any pictures or other suggestions please feel free to post. Also, Quailhound, do you have any suggested public land that is great for hunting and not as pressured?

Im not going to be much help on spots as I am a bit farther west out in Ca but I know there is some quail hunting in the southern part of the state (scaled and possibly gambels quail) as I have researched looking to pick up some scalies behind my springers. Just do your home work, learn about each birds habitat needs, the fish & game dept should have a wealth of info on where and how to hunt birds there. I imagine there is some good sage grouse hunting out there also and maybe a few huns? I know Jmac used to live out there and jsdriggs makes a trip for pheasants annually so maybe they might offer some more info. I've only been hunting for 4 seasons now but through lots of research and even more boot leather I can bag any species of upland birds in my state. It's just a matter of time before you figure it all out.

McGeeOJ, Welcome to a great site and hope your transition to the West is all what you hope it is!!!! Hope to see you posting often!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Quail, one last question. How are your Springers outside of hunting? What are their temperaments like at home? If you have kids, how are they with them? Really hyper or chill?

I think anyone on here who owns springers can attest to how good they are in the house. My dogs are a 3yr old male, a 2yr old female, and 2 of their 7 month old male pups. When they come in the house, and all of them do every night, they settle right down and find a place to lay (preferablely a lap). No kids around here but the female and 2 pups are great with kids. The male was my first pup and in the process of building a bird crazy hunting machine I forgot to socialize him with young kids so he is stand offish around them but that was my fault. Before springers I used to keep pit bulls and none of them were half the gaurd dog my male is. If he feels his home or family members are threatened he lets the threat know he is not happy bit he also is good at differenciating between intruders and friends.

Here is a pic of my male, as you can see he isn't built like a typical springer. I haven't weighed him lately but I would hues he goes about 44lbs right now. He has his winter coat on but if he had his summer hair cut right now you would see every cut and muscle in his body. I love his build, he is an extremely powerful dog in a small package.

Cool dog quail. I'm looking forward to getting out that way, securing a dog and starting to whack some birds. I've got a bid on another shotgun right now that's SXS and that's IC/IC. In the process of selling my boat, all my fishing gear and deciding which Liberty safe to buy. I've also got to get a nice rifle for long range, thinking about .308 for elk hunting. My brother in law is an elk champ in New Mexico and I am almost as riled up about that as well. I appreciate your replies my friend and hope all is well out your way.

Thank you. Sounds like you'll be set up pretty well when you get their. Your going to be in the heart of big mulie, elk, and prong horn country so a good flat shooting .308 will serve you well and a SxS is the ultimate in the uplands.

ha ha ha, awesome. Maybe when I get champ status you can come out, hunt and I'll let you buy me some beers. ha ha ha. Take er easy and have a nice weekend.

McGee

Sounds like a plan, the dogs and I are always up for a new adventure.

Hey Quail. Do you eat Chukar? Are they good? I read online that they aren't very good to eat but you know how that goes. Also, where did you buy your dogs?

Chukar a delicious, they taste just like quail imo. My dogs are just local everyday hunting dogs, nothing special and my pups are from my male and female. If you want a top level springer FCSpringers on here breeds some wonderful hunters.

Thank you, There is some very good dogs all over the US, Sounds like QH as well. I never say mine are the best, but rather some darn good ones. We usually can help people find what they are after if we don't have one. And in fact refer more out then we provide, simply because we raise very few. So far we have never in history had a litter in the fall, You can guess why.:D. As far as chukar eating,, Yummmmmmmm! great birds to eat.
