Rain

OK gentlemen, how do you approach hunting in the morning when it’s rained an inch or two the day before? Do you wade into the CRP or are they are they are going to be out in the Milo stubble?

I am not an ornithologist, but my expectation is that when the rains stop, the birds are going to be ready to find food since they have been trying to stay dry for the past 2 days. Unfortunately, I think they are going to be moving to the fields tomorrow and Sunday, and the bare ground will be impossible to walk in for those of us on 2 legs! Not to mention, muddy boots add weight, so stamina may also be a concern for me personally. What I know about Kansas, it will dry out some day and eventually the ground will freeze. I will have better opportunities in the coming days!

I think the dirt roads out there become very tough to navigate when the become this wet.
They most certainly do. Many become entirely non navigable. I had plans of being out there to hunt the opener, but I’m going to let things dry out for a few days.

Supposed to rain in my neck of the woods until noon tomorrow. We’ve had 2-1/4” of rain. I’d think the side roads are going to be impassable for a few days. Might try to hit a couple of WIHA close to the paved roads tomorrow afternoon.

Man that will make for a tough opener on those Kansas roads. Worst situation I’ve ever found myself in a vehicle. Never again.

Nice to get that rain to rehydrate things. Up here in IA were went through about 75 days of next to no anything, this week we received about 1.5" between two rains. That is a start, but she really dried out Aug, Sept and Oct. We did get rains thought the growing season until the first days of August. Most of our unpaved roads are graveled and will be fine with a few inches of rain. Use care on those secondary roads, you don't want to be that video on facebook getting winched-out.

They closed the roads from Colorado so I suspect there won’t be too many folks here tomorrow. Maybe Sunday the crowds might appear.

I-70 is closed now at Goodland due to over crowding in Burlington. Doesn’t look like it’s going to let up until tomorrow mid day. Hope everybody's safe and sound. I spent the night in the barn in Old Town Burlington during a blizzard a few years back. Not fun but at least it was dry.

If anyone knows what’s good for them, they will let things dry out a little tomorrow/Sunday before attempting to use the roads. I’ve made the mistake in my youth unfortunately, nothing ruins a day of hunting like spending 3 hours walking to homesteads trying to find someone to winch you out. Better to play it safe, youll enjoy the trip so much more

I made the mistake about four years ago in iowa. Hit a minimum maintenance that started out gravel and turned into a muddy grease track. New tires, 4wd on, regardless of hitting the gas or cranking on the wheel my truck only traveled forward at 5 mph. A small lip on the road edge is the only thing that kept me from sliding into the field. I said a few Hail Mary's when I made it off that double section road. I've been much better at reading roads ever since.

Made it out for the opener which was very windy early. Everything settled down in the afternoon and the weather was perfect. Many of my normal spots were hayed so that was the bad news. Found a few birds and did some good shooting. The roads were tricky but started drying out with the late day sun and morning wind. Not many birds around again this season. Good luck to everyone and may God bless your hunting.IMG_4039.jpeg
