Question about dog box

I have a F150 super crew 4x4, that has a hard tonneuo (sp) cover on it.

I need to get a 2 hole dog box that is big / deep enough to put 2 dogs in one hole if needed.

Have any of you ever put a dog box in the back, and close a hard cover leaving the tailgate down. I am worried about exhaust being a problem.

With the tailgate down there should be plenty of air flow, and I have a gate that extends out over the open tailgate to keep the rest of my stuff from falling out.

This would be the most convenient setup for me. But I don't want to gas the dogs.

Any thoughts or experience doing this. What I would really like to find is a CO sensor that I could put back there to make sure I would not have a problem, but I don't have a battery powered one.

I have a '99 F-150 Super Crew 4x4 with a 6 & 1/2' bed and folding hard tonneau cover. I have an aluminun 2 hole/compartment dog box that just does fit under the tonneau cover. I have driven 1 & 1/2 hrs. one way with the tail gate closed to some hunting spots and have not gassed/killed my beagles yet.

Thanks

I don't think it would be safe with the cover I have. I find too much dust that gets pulled in with the cover down and the tailgate up. The cover sits high above the top of the quarter pannels, which I think drops the air pressure more than normal at the tailgate.

This may be one of those situations where you should go with your gut, and my gut tells me that the tonneau cover on my truck should be off.

I will see if I can find a CO tester that I could put back there and see what it reads.

you are worrying to much todays vehicles dont produce enough bad chemicals out of the tailpipe to kill you in an enclosed garage or even make you sick the dogs will be fine

Topper on a Tacoma here....vari-kennels on a platform under it.
CO monitor showed lower readings in the kennels than when placed on the back seat with the windows down and in town traffic.

There can be a problem with exhaust...next to an idleing truck on a motel lot on a foggy morning with no wind, for example.
Just be alert...monitor and act according to your situation.

I would never use a reduced volume tonneau cover if dust was considered any issue at all.
Plus, do not expect exhaust and airflow conditions to remain constant over the life of the truck/topper/whatever.
Affecting dog performance may be an issue with air quality along with dog safety.

Get a capper and get rid of the cover.

My dogs ride in the bed quite a bit. Tailgate up, back window down. Side windows open. I have an ARE hard cover capper on it. Believe me, you would have ZERO to worry about. Just dont sit there idling . Exaust never gets into the capper

I am for an ARE topper. But need to find a used one, as I don't want to spend that kind of money for a truck with nearly 200K miles. Just having a hard time finding one around here.

Any suggestions as to where to look for one, Craigs list and the paper have been a bust.
