Question about Brittany's

Got a local guy selling French Brittany pups about 5 months old for 400 dollars.

Are there any major differences between French Brittany and just plain Brittany. Which do you prefer or is there a preference.

Dad always had bird dogs before I ever owned a dog but never a Brittany so about all i know about them are they are close working, good retrievers.

French Brittany's are great dogs. They are hard hunters and love their master and the whole family. They really are a good house dogs in the off-season. The major point about a French that some say is good and some will say is bad. They are a close working dog for a Brittany. They work a little farther out than most Flushers but a lot closer than a GSP or Pointer and even field trial bred Brittany's. Most will retrieve even with the small mouth. They always find a way..........Bob

Nothing wrong with the Frenchies but I would be concerned why the guy is selling pups that are 5 months old. Unless these dogs have had a lot, and I mean a lot, of socialization with people it could spell trouble. They also should be started on basic obedience and had exposure to birds. The fact they are 5 months old throws up a big red flag for me. I would spend some time checking out the breeder. Ask for references and talk to people who have purchased pups from him. Is this guy a full time breeder or did he just happen to have a female that he bred??? If he's not a professional breeder I'd be very careful. Have the parent's hip been certified? What does the pup's pedigree look like? Sorry to maybe come across as a little negative but I'm just trying to make sure you don't purchase a problem.

Bob pretty much said it. The French Brittanys tend to be a little smaller and closer working dogs than the American Brittanys.

Let us know what you do and good luck.

I am not a Brittany owner but have some knowledge of bird dogs, I hope this is obvious but make sure that breeder is raising hunting lines and not several generations of fancy show dogs that never have seen a field or game bird scent, the instinct traits can be bred out of the line!

Thanks for the input. When I talked to him he said he took the female to kansas last year to hunt and she did well. He is a hunter so I kind of assumed its a hunting breed line but thats a good point and one I surely would of checked out prior to purchase. He said he had introduced them to pen raised quail. I didn't talk to him all that long since he was at work.

The fact that they hunt close doesn't bother me my weimers are close dogs one is 9 the other 7 thought some young blood may be good. It could take some time for them to accept this dog though since they are both very territorial.

He is not a dog breeder per say. He told me his bitch is two and that he wont be breeding her again he said one litter is it. I agree you always want your pup to come from good stock. I have to say though the dogs that I have had in the past outshined the dogs I have had with better pedigree's. The papers dont fill the game sack. I think I will take a look at them today not saying I am going to purchase one but may be worth getting more info on one.

I doubt if you need to be concerned about the pups being all show/no hunt type dogs because the French Brittany breed is not recognized by the American Kennel Club, the Big Brother of dog shows and breeds in the USA. In fact, certain appearance characteristics that are common in the Frenchies are considered outright disqualifications for Brittanies in AKC-sanctioned shows. Another good thing about Brittanies of any type is that they have never been popular as pets like labs and goldens, thereby minimizing the chance that the hunt has been bred out of some of them due to breeding neglect.

If you get one, best of luck in bringing it along.
