Quail

A friend and I would like to purchase some quail to use for training. We plan on getting approx. 2 dozen. Can anyone give me some ideas on what we will need for a pen? And once we have the quail and the pen any tips on maintaining them? Thanks.

Keep them warm and dry if possible. Quail can be a challenge when it comes to keeping them alive. My parents raised pheasants and quail. I always thought the pheasants were spastic and the quail were weak. It didn't take much weather to lose half of our quail. The folks did well raising everything but quail.

If you're getting mature birds, you should be much better off.

Tips for maintaining them.....KEEP THE PREDATORS OUT OF THE PEN. This is much easier said than done. The second time a predator got in our pens it killed hundreds of pheasants. That was the day my dad hung it up for good:(.

You don't need much room for quail, just enough to keep their wings strong if you don't have a recall pen you can let them out of everyday. A long narrow pen would be better than a big square. sink a standard sheet of ply wood 2' deep around the perimeter to make side walls, this will keep the dogs from bothering them and keep the predators out.
