Quail

Does anyone else feel like there are more quail around this spring? I live on the edge of Topeka and every single morning I hear so many quail whistling in the fields across the street from my house. I went on a walk the other morning and heard 8 different birds calling across the countryside. Also I was out fishing at my friends farm pond the other day which is surrounded by nothing but pasture ground and was surprised to hear birds calling all over the place. I didn't expect that since there isn't much woody cover near his pond.

I haven't seen any pairs yet but I haven't been looking that much. Just glad to hear that awesome sound!

They have been paired up since late March. Unfortunately I don't know if we are going to have much of a hatch with all the rain. Nearly 20 inches in May and June.

MAB , you are in pretty good habitat area , I remember being in your area a. Few years back and eating lunch in between appointments and hearing quail . I am thinking with it drying out a bit we should have any birds that need to re-nest in good shape .

I have done a fair amount of habitat work on my place the last two years. I have at least twice as many quail calling on my place as last year.

I don't know how the rest of the area is, but I hope we have a good hatch. With the rain we had there should be plenty of bugs for chicks.

Tonight my pup after working on some pigeons found two pairs of quail, while I was running him.

I'm also in NE KS and there is no doubt there are more quail this year than in a long time in my area. Seeing them all over, both paired up and alone. Also seeing a fair number of pheasants around. If we can catch a break in the weather it's going to be a good fall. It's so nice to hear the bobs calling.

You must be hearing my ring tone.

It's actually come in handy having a quail call on my ring tone. A lot of nights they will answer back when someone calls.

In fact my wife was hearing the quail call behind our house a couple of mornings ago and thought I forgot my phone at home.

Good stuff. I used to have a pheasant cackle for my ring tone. We were out one day on some walk in and I had 3 calls in a row. Each time my buddy says "stop, do you hear that"...I didn't tell him until the third time. Good entertainment.

Was fishing yesterday evening and heard several calling. Even saw a pair on the highway when driving home. I too think they are rebounding in some parts of the state.

Yesterday I saw a hen quail on a fence post. She let me drive past her. I watched her whistle for 10-15 minutes. Pretty sure she was rounding up chicks. Decided not to walk up and confirm.

Of course, we knew some nests would be successful. Always a question of how many. Seeing pairs.

They are Everywhere !!!! When we got back from Church yesterday we had a pair bugging in a small clover patch by our back deck , within 20 yds of the Britts Kennels

Was across the highway yesterday morning taking care of some horses and could hear about 5 different ones calling. Just loud as could be! Love hearing them call. Nothing like that sound.

Took the family on a mini vacation in the central Flint Hills. We explored all of the local museums as well as the Tallgrass Preserve down by Strong City. We had a great time. The best part was that literally everywhere we went outside we heard quail calling. We spent a few minutes fishing at a fishing lake and I counted at least 6 different bob's calling. Note...None of these area's had any crops, just native grass and forbs. Beautiful area with lots of quail...couldn't help but contemplate a move.
