Uncle Buck,

My cousin is interested in this breed, but doesn't know a whole lot about them. Can you give me a little bit of a background? Are they good with waterfowl as well as upland? Are they good with kids? How heavy do they shed (compared to a lab)?

Thanks and happy hunting!

ChadBritt,
I have PP I rescued when he was 1 1/2yr old and 50lbs,

First : he gets along great with my Boys 4 and 6yr old has never growled or snapped at them even when the kids are playing around him and accidentally hit him.

Second : he is the long hair version and does not shed, it's like he has hair not fur.

Third : Waterfowling I am starting that stage right now and he is picking up the land and water training very quickly, mind you I am not wanting a Hunt Trial Master champion I just want the dog that retrieves ducks and put them in my hand.

My take on the breed is very positive they are smart and very willing to train and there eager to please plus the natural ability to hunt blew me away. just to let you know I have a Chesapeake for Waterfowling and you how stubborned they can be sometimes. hope this helps. I will post this on the other thread too.

Thanks for the information. It really helps. The breed sounds great, but I've never been around them and am trying to get as much info as possible. I assume the can handle cold water just fine?

I use a neoprene vest on him during the winter if we are going to duck hunt, because we sit around alot and tell jokes, as far as upland I just use a protected vest because (look at my avatar picture)he is on the move all the time and that keeps him warm enough.

While perhaps not on par re frigid water as a Lab or Chessie, they relish all the work they can get in the water, fearlessly. I guess what I am saying is once they get out of extremely cold water they will get a little cold. There is varience in the coats re how well they shake off. If you are going to hunt in extremely cold conditions, get a coarse, dense coated Pud.
Benelli Banger will advise you I had my dogs out in some 30 plus winds near 0degree temps on the last weekend of the season last year. One was a pup under 6 months old and she was pointing birds. They love the snow.

Uncle Buck

I have had my dog Bo for about 6 months. He is one of Buck's dogs, but was with him 'til about 6 months due to some problems with the first buyers. This dog is phenomenal. At 6 months, he pointed 9 birds, 4 of them roosters and brought them to hand at 50 yards. He hunts well in the lower 48, loves the snow and the Ptarmigan here in Alaska, and now that we have melted the ice loves to swim (our water is not warm).

He loves to work for you, is great with other dogs and people, and the only downside is you will spend a lot of time explaining to people what kind of dog he is. Buck named him Bo because of a white spot on his chest, but his official name is Czheckmates C'est Bodacious Chickmagnet. I had to use a C as he is out of the C litter.

This is a great dog, I don't think you would have any regrets with them, and Buck is a very straightforward guy. He brought Bo down to KS to meet me, and hunted with us for a couple days. Enjoyed him and his dogs, and glad he felt comfortable with giving me Bo.

Jon--Thanks for the testimonial. It is great to hear good things about Bo. He became quite a pet while I had him for an extended time.
I spent the weekend in Glendo Wyoming with Bo's brother Stub doing a little walleye fishing. Excellent fishing on Sat., a little slow Sunday. Did some training with Stub plus the dogs I brought, Poco and Axel. Monday AM we did a 3mile hike on the North Platte. The 3 dogs were in the water more than out.
We should have good hunting this fall.

How old is this pup and does you sonm still have him?

What can I say?

Bo and I went out last week to hunt Ptarmigan off Lake Kukaklek in SW Alaska. First hunt for Bo since the end of March. The first 2 birds that came up were a double, but the rest of the covey went to my right. When I looked back, Bo was heading back from the farthest bird, so I thought I would have to send him for the near one. As he got closer, I realized he had picked up both birds. So we both got doubles. Pretty amazing.

I ran the pet from Glendo last Sat. Stub, Bo's brother has never been on a live bird as the guy got here the night before the test. I did a couple drags for track and he did well enough and thru a couple dead chucks out for hm to find, which he did and rtrieved nicely.
Come Sat it was 90 degrees and 80% humidity and we ran seventh. Stub found two chuks, but did not point. Caught the first and retrieved nicely. When the second flushed he chased a bit and two more got up. One did not go far and he found it, made his second retrieve. Very soft mouth and both birds were put back in the crates and used again. He did an excellent job on the track, plus pointed the rooster and brought it to hand very much alive again. They gave him points on the rosti point so we did not flunk. Water work was not in question. 97 prize III FINAL SCORE. If I had the dog for a week he would be a steady pointer, Prize I dog.
The bad news is one of my sons dogs that went to upper New York state was doing well just before a test when it got brain Menningitus. The guy said it was the most promising pup he ever owned and he is a pro trainer. He is heartbroken but will get another Pudelpointer. He wants one exact same breeding and we will do our best.
Co-incidently, the owner of the dog I tested had brain menningitus but recovered. He had to learn how to talk again and is really not a 100% yet.

Another of Bo's brothers got NAVHDA TESTED Sunday--Prize I 110 pts. Of 10 pups tested out of my bitch Mazzie, 8 Prize I, 1 Prize II and 1 Prize III. The guy named the dog Buck, of all things. Bo, Stub, Spook, and Buck all retrieve to hand like their sire and have not been force fetched. Very soft mouths.
