Private Access

I have hunted pheasants in Kansas many times but not in the last five years. I have two young labs that I would like to get on some wild birds this year. I know the numbers are way down and that is the reason for seeking some private access. Area is not a big factor but west or north west would be better. I am not asking for something for nothing but just need access to some good habitat. I don't mind to pay a little but I do not need lodging or meals just a place to hunt. I have always been able to gain access by knocking on doors but would like to have something already set up this year before I leave if possible. It would most likely be just me and the dogs but I might bring my son or sil. I am looking to hunt Thanksgiving or later. Any help or leads would be appreciated. Loyd Nichols

Kansas Creek Game Birds in Republic County offers a nice reserve hunting experience. See the website.

birds

get the walk-maps, pick an area according to the bird surveys and walk your butt off like other hunter's do, no freebies here

cheers

Maybe he could tag along with you, mustistuff. Then, you can take me spring turkey hunting on some of your Western KS hotspots.

For the first reply thanks I will look into it. For the second reply thanks also but I would really like to get them on some wild birds. For the third and fourth lets just say that a man that has put in more miles behind a dog than most is by no fault of his own not physically able to put in the miles it take on public land to find birds, is his money not welcome in Kansas anymore. If you figure fuel, out of state license, motel, food and everything else the few birds found in 3-4 days are probably worth about $100 each anyway. If I really thought that most people in Kansas felt that way I would make dang sure that I had a full tank of fuel before leaving Oklahoma so I could make it to Nebraska before needing more. Again thanks for the first two replies and if I don't come up with anything then I will just continue north.

birds

think that most of neb. has fewer birds and fewer places to hunt, good luck with that. land and good land is available in kans. do your home work and plan on the walk ins and then when you need a break, knock on a door, next best thing is to wait till you hear about a snow storm, get sick, and go hunting

cheers

Didn't say a thing about hunting Nebraska. I just have to pass through there to get to South Dakota.

BDK......sent you a PM

BTW I live in Kentucky and grew up in Nebraska....
Have hunted Kansas since the mid 90's and have access to good habitat in southeast, central and north western parts of the state. I would be glad to share some of my info and I appreciate the sincerity of your post and you seem like a good guy!

Anyway.....the farms I hunt are large, usually not posted and I am sure hunted occasionally by others. I do not own them and since I live so far away.....why horde them for myself....if another hunter could also enjoy the warm reception and good hunting that I had.

I am 44 and had the great fortune to grow on the Prairie during the 70's and 80's.....I've seen good, bad and non-existent habitat conditions and remember how hard we had to work for birds before CRP was introduced in 1985.

A few tried and true methods to gain private access:
1. Contact local chamber of commerce in the areas you plan to hunt.
they usually have lots of info and can help steer you toward lodging, and land to hunt.
2. County plat maps.....basically a rural directory for phone numbers and listing of ownership on each section per township in each county.....really cool!
3. It time permits.....travel to your area during the off season and knock on doors and ask for permission to run your bird dogs during the upcoming season.....I rarely say to anyone that I am hunting....I say I would like to run my bird dogs.....works great for me.

Best of luck to you!

So you think coming on a public message board and throwing around money will get you a place to hunt. Good luck. Not trying to be rude but hunting access is hard to find anywhere anymore. I'm not sure a bunch of people will line up to allow/invite someone they don't know. Kansas has a lot of walk in hunting access. Bird numbers are going to lower this year than last I think. Now there is actually cover but low bird numbers will have them really spread out.

I should think you could just knock on a few doors and gain access to some private land, especially since you will be out after Thanksgiving. It is going to be a tough year in Kansas and you will probably not have too much competition out there. Most of the fair weather hunters will be done by Thanksgiving. Since you are hunting by yourself you should have a pretty decent chance of finding some land to hunt. Good luck and let us know how you do.

I think it being your first post on this forum EVER and the fact that you just started asking for land access is what set people in the wrong direction about your intentions on here!

When I hunted Kansas Creek Game Birds there were some wild pheasants and their pen-raised birds are strong flying. If you want wild birds only, you best head to SD cuz KS just ain't got birds this year after three years of drought.

x2.
Mustistuff's first post amused me immensely.
:)

This whole thread has gotten completely out of hand. It was never my intent to step on toes or horn in on someones hunting spot. Seems as though this is viewed like a lake naming thread on a duck hunting forum. Never the intent. Yall have fun.
