Preserve Hunt

Took the dogs out to a local preserve yesterday. It is a great place w/ a great guide. I will mention the name of the outfit, but they're going to have to do some advertising on our site before I'll brag them up (Webguy, I should get a cookie for this!).

Anyway, I took all of my dogs including my 7 month old GSP (Tate) and his sister, which belongs to a friend of mine. My eldest dog Joules bumped the first rooster out of range. The sister found the second bird, a chukar, and gave a brief flash point, the bird flushed and my buddy knocked it down w/ one shot. She went and picked the bird up, then ran about 150 yards and ate it.

The dogs had settled by this point and the rest of the day was a blast. Tate ended up w/ 7 SOLID points for the afternoon and retrieved 5 of the 8 birds we managed to harvest, outperforming all of my older more experienced dogs.

Preserve hunting is a bit costly, but it sure is worth it for the pups. I just can't wait to hunt behind this dog in the years to come. His points are as pretty as any I've seen and I couldn't ask for more in the way of enthusiasm. Cory, if you're reading this, Tate is everything I expected and more!

Kansasbrittany-I also hunted preserve this weekend with my dad and friend i wanted to show them the training/work i have put in sense the fall with my 18month old GSP "GUS".We bought 9 pheasants got 9 solid pionts 9 in the bag! This being my first pionter i dont know if i can go back to a lab?My dog was mas happy as a pig in shit!:cheers:Congrats on your hunt also!

My wife and I went to a preserve down by KC on March 1st. They put out 20 quail and over about 3.5 hours we found and killed 17 of them. My wife wasn't shooting that well and let several get away. The dogs hadn't hunted for awhile so they were pretty wound up at first but still had a good time.
It was fun to watch the Welshie find and then pounce on the birds. She didn't catch any but it wasn't because she didn't try.
I thought for what they charged we had an exceptional hunt!!!:10sign:

Welshie is short for Welsh Springer Spaniel. Most people mistake them for a Brittany.
They are kind of rare, I think the AKC only registered 150 or so last year. I would have never had one except for my wife. Her friend has had one for years so she looked around and found a woman down in Kansas that had a litter.
I've been hunting over pointing dogs for years so a flusher is very different for me but it's fun to watch her intensity in hunting and then when she smells something she becomes almost fanatical in locating and flushing it.
I'm working on having the GSP's point and hold and then sending her into flush but I still have a quite away to go on that.
If that comes to fruition I will be very happy guy.

I'm beginning to be a big believer in the preserve hunt. We did Eckman in Baldwin in late Jan when we couldn't afford the time to get out West and gotta say I had 2 days of fun in 4 hrs and 18 birds with my pup. On paper it saved me money vs a trip to Dodge City.

What scares me is the CRP situation and hunting clubs --all the ground that we've been hunting for so long may go away someday.
