This will be the first litter for my Griff,
My question for breeders/hunters...... at what point during her pregnancy do you take her out of the field?

exercise

i think you will find that light exercise is to be recommended but that a hunting trip is not. you got a fairly expensive dog sound like, why take the chance and ruin her and the pups both and then have to spend what ever you might make on vet bills, ya just oughta slow down.

cheers

Once they are bred I'm done. As said light running in the yard, some fetch with a bumper etc. But I quit all hard workouts. I know some will run trials 4 weeks in and well, whatever. I also know some that did that and lost the litter. Simply put, it ain't worth the risk. You can keep her plenty exercised with running lightly in the yard. So now I am in the same boat. No workouts for my gal till DEC. Misses all fall trials, National, and most of the hunting season. But Dec is my favorite time any way here. So she will get to hunt for a month.:D 63 days gestation till birth, and 8 weeks with the kids. The last couple weeks if she is not too run down you can start some light work. But most times they look like hell, and are bagged down. So let them gain weight back, dry up, and enjoy the time after that. Good luck

Gestation is usually 63 days. Would be surprised if it isn't exactly 63. Your pups should be born well before hunting season.

I wouldn't be running a pregnant bitch hard in the summer, or any time for that matter, but especially summer. I wouldn't run your dog hard either.

Research has shown that both exercise and the bitch pointing birds while pregnant benefits the pups. The level and timing of that activity is question. I generally keep it limited in their third trimester. Before that, some light to moderate exercise is beneficial. Usually you can watch their physical changes and know when things are starting to get more exposed to harm. Just like humans, the length and frequency of this activity should wane as the pregnancy proceeds. She shouldn't act like it is work.

I start gradually reducing exercise right after the breeding takes place. By the time she is 6-7 weeks in, I am down to very short runs. Here is a little video of the last run I did with one of mine a year ago when she was pregnant. This was a week before she whelped and what you see in the video was all we did. It was pretty short and not very strenuous. http://youtu.be/uaJCAYymvlA
