Prairie Chicken free zone

Don't think there is a need to go back to area I hunted yesterday. I feel fairly confident in saying that the two very large pastures I hunted yesterday are chicken free zones.

Bob and Obie left no rock unturned and no hillside unhunted. They ran the entire half sections of ground inch by inch. It was fun watching them roll over the landscape but would have been nice to see them rewarded for the efforts.

Maybe back to the old haunts.

One of the unique things about hunting prairie chickens is that they have a propensity to move around a lot. You might hunt the same spot 3 times and move nothing only to drop by for a 4th time and have a very successful hunt.

They are fun! I enjoy the scenery as much as anything. First time out this year I debated on whether or not to even shoot one when they got up until the last two made a late departure so I downed one of those and it was a very young bird. Hen at that, which kind of made me sick. I guess I'm just not much of a 'killer" these days lol!!!

Yea I get the same way most times with quail...but it's gonna take killing few more chickens for revenge before I start feeling bad for them lol

Good to know where a person is safe from prairie chicken attack. :p

In Minnesota I met an older gentleman that was tracking radio collared chickens along the glacial ridge (where prairie chickens live year around and hunters chase for a week).

He said older birds will relocate once the season begins and go very remote until they sense the pressure has passed by.

that doesn't surprise in the least...they are very smart. would be VERY interesting to track them over the course of a hunting season in an area and see just what they are up to.

Just doing my part to keep everyone safe. Best to stay inside until the end of the season. Me and my pointers will take up patrols in known prairie chicken areas.

I dont know if you guys have been around the council grove area yet but there were a few around there last year. I have actually seen a good many quail this year. Hope to do some more dog work this week.

Saturday should be a great day to work dogs on some birds. I'm headed west in a few hours to chase chickens.
