Pointing lab...?

WI ditch chicken

This past January I went down to Kansas to chase pheasants. I harvested wheat with I guy down there back in 2012. He and his wife were nice enough to let my brother 4 year old nephew my uncle and I stay in their camper and take us hunting. I brought my 6 year old black lab and my sisters mut with. (The mut is a whole nother story!)

This guy was the owner of the harvesting operation and had 160 acres he wanted to hunt first. He said we would mostly be going after quail. That the first covey might be alittle difficult for my dog but after that she should be able to figure it out.

We were walking an over grown fence row when my lab got birdy my boss and I were 20 yards away so we stopped and watched. She zeroed in one the sent and went on the most beautiful point I ever saw! My boss walked in kicked the birds up and we got 2. He looked at me and said "You never told me you had a pointing lab."
I said to him "Hell I didn't know I had one either!"

All 4 days we were down there she pointed every covey of quail. She never pointed at pheasants Grouse or woodcock back home. When she was young she had a very slight hesitation before flushing a bird but never a full out point. Any ideas why she would point coveys of quail?

That's strange:confused:

I have a flushing lab. He'll often lock up/point birds that sit real tight but he'll do it on everything/all game birds. Yeah, I'm not sure why your lab only locks up on quail like that.

Momentary lapse in good judgement?? Hope it doesnt happen again!:D

Ha. My thoughts exactly. I had a yellow lab that would do that. My guess is the large number of birds confused him. Once he did it and it worked he continued. T - 4.5 hrs sitting here in the super 8 in Murdo Sd

I almost pull the trigger on heading out there this Sunday but theres too much going on right now. I'm thinking a late season trip this year. God willing.

That was kinda what I figured. Large number of birds confused her so she pointed and it worked.

That mut of my sisters was a hell of a quail hound too. I knew there was a covey around when she would stop trying to walk on my feet and range out and look for them!

Nick I get it we left after work and rolled in here about 3am. It is wet, foggy and about 45. The dogs should shine today.

Ok I Actually think it was just a new smell. We've all heard stories of dogs that point porkies, skunks, deer etc etc.just an unknown unidentified smell.
