Wyo resident here, I'm biased as I've only ever owned one versatile dog, my 1 yr old Griffon. I love him, he really is a great dog in the field, water, and at home. Kids absolutely love him. He also is very well mannered with people, and in the boat! I can speak all day on him specifically, but I'll refrain as I love all the breeds I've hunted with, and met through NAVHDA and in the field.
To add and refrain from repeating what others have already said, consider a German Wirehaired Pointer. All GWP's I've met are sweet dogs, and great in the field. Once I get my guy close to or consider him finished (broke), it'll be time for the next pup. For me, another Griff is the leader, however, the GWP, and DD's have really opened my eyes for consideration. GWP because of the ones I've met, a DD because of their strict breeding standards, have yet to hunt with one.
You'll be pleasantly surprised on the birds and variety here in Wyoming. Plus you're an easy drive from phenomenal bird hunting in neighborhood states with additional species.
