Pointers and Flushers

Thinking about getting a pointer to hunt alongside my flushing black lab. Would this be a good combo?

Unless your lab is capable of learning how to honor a point, it's probably not going to be the most effective combo.

I would have to agree with 21, going to mess the pointer up.

no way I run my pointers with labs all the time its on how you teach them and on how much control you have on them on wether or not it will work

Not me , I dont run my dogs with flushers. Lot of pressure on a pointer while on point with a dog flushing, could pick up some bad habits in my point of view. To each his own. Like my dad always said, if everyone liked the samething their would be one very busy woman..;)

Growing up, we always ran English setters with a black lab female and they did good together. Dad would keep the lab close, and once the Setters had the point, she would be sent in. I always thought it worked real well, but like you guys have said earlier, to each his own

LOL, don't you mean the flusher could pick up bad habits?:D

That is a classic.

I run my labs with my friends pointers and never had a problem. We work far enough a part that they don't interfere. If I see my dogs working towards his dogs on point I call them back.

I hunted my old yellow lab with pointers and he was trained to sit/stop/pause to the flush. I ran him in NAHRA hunt tests and they have an upland test that requires (in the Senior level) the dog to sit/stop/pause when the bird flushes and a shot. Once that part is over the handler can then call their dog back at heel and/or if a bird is shot and knocked down then the judge can require the handler to send their dog to retrieve the bird.

Conan was my old yellow lab and he would quarter and being doing his thing, once I saw or heard that a dog was on point, then I would blow the whistle and or call him so he could see me and yell sit and as the gunner approaches the dog on point, I would say honor, honor and then boom, when the bird is up and shot, well if the bird went down in his vicinity I would send him to retreive it.

Because lets face it fellas, I haven't seen any pointers that can mark as well as a lab and retriever just like I haven't seen a lab that can point as well as a pointer.....

Your old yellow Lab was a very well trained dog. IME, not very many are trained by the average working guy to that level.

As to yr last statement, I know some Pointing Lab breeders who say their dogs both point and retrieve better than any other breed on the planet.

Well yes I have met those types of trainers/owners and I have seen those dogs work. I have judged them at National NAHRA hunt tests and watched a lab on point on a bird trap. Had to have the handler call the dog, hunt elsewhere and whent he dog turned again in the direction of the planted bird, bam, release the trap and flush. Dog sat, bird shot and retrieved.

LIke my old mentor would say "If I want a pointer I will buy a pointer" I do to much waterfowl. would like to have a pointing breed some day...
