These are the two areas for the potholes one an acre and one two acres

Very, very nice! Have you seen any woodcock on the property? Are you planning on planting any fruit bearing shrubs?

I just got in from deer hunting, taking a break, then headed back to camp again. I was thinking about your land while I was sitting on deer stand. The thought of owning "pheasant" property sure is inviting.

I know you got your buck already, but will you use this property for deer hunting?

Fldbred, I didn't get looking around over there till the leaves were off all the trees and bushes. I don't notice any berries on anything now but I haven't been in the early successional part much as I'm concentrating getting the grass areas ready for spring planting. I am going to try and produce a good stand of switchgrass in one year. It will cost a little more for herbicides but I'll be footing the bill so I can spend a little more money than I do for PF funds.

The property is not a primary deer area although some nice buck have been shot there so the seller told me. There is a lot of deer sign like rubs, trails etc. There are not a lot of trees for cover but when the switch gets five feet high, the cover conditions will change. It can handle probably 2 or 3 hunters then.

Are you seeing any deer at camp?

It was one of the strangest openers I have ever witnessed! I didn't see a deer till one o'clock, a small buck, then just two does till dark. Tuesday morning just two does till nine. Hollowwatcher had to be back at work, so we came back to shower etc. I am heading back up.
The strange part is we didn't hear ANY shooting, I don't mean not that much, I mean ANY local shots! There is tons of buck sign and some huge rubs, so at least I know their still out there!
I did flush a grouse on my property!

Do you think you'll add your property to the flushing survey?

Looking good Slammer!
A perfect time to survey your kingdom, right after a fresh snow.
You'll be able to see exactly what's going on with the wildlife.

RS,
Have you given any thought of what you might plant in the wetland areas? Any of the Rushes or how about Giant Bur Reed ? Sorry switch grass won't grow there!:)

I hope to plant switchgrass everywhere I can. I read online that switch will grow anywhere reed canary grass will grow. The very wet areas are going to be pot holes. I'm hoping the areas around them are cattails. I may try some waterfowl plants in wetter areas.

Lynn,

Have you had a chance to walk the property with snow on the ground? Tracks?

Yes, no bird tracks but I wasn't expecting any. Cover is too thin to hold birds now. There are some small cattail areas but too small to be much use. Here's a link you can post at HPA.

They're pretty quiet on the last article. Rober also misquoted the article when he said the west doesn't want to send birds because of PA s habitat. They don't want to send birds because of the decline in western habitat. The article refers to decreasing habitat in the west 3 different times. I already corrected him when he posted it at PA Assoc of Sportsmans Club board.

Hey Slammer, where you been? I think we need to hear some updates on that little pheasant paradise you own! Recent pictures?

Things are proceeding slowly. Will not get switchgrass planting till next year. Waiting for a bunch of government agencies to agree on the wetland construction and soil placement. This place is a red tape nightmare. Hopefully it will be worth it when its done.

Well if anyone can deal with red tape it's you. It'll make it that much sweeter when it's done.
Are you planning to archery hunt the property this year?

Yes, I plan to hunt woodcock and archery this year and rifle if I haven't got a deer by then. I messed up on doe permits so if I don't get a buck I only have one place to hunt doe and it's a different WMA than the land is in. I may do some chucker hunts there too if I get birdie.

Hey Buddy, where have you been? You must be hunkered down in your Bunker some where!
Any luck with the bow so far? Seen any woodcock on the property yet? Is Lilly ready to go?

Any word on who will be the new Pheasant Forever biologists? Shon will be missed!

Fldbred, busy-busy-busy! Youth hunt coming up soon, working on starting a seed business, getting ready to head for Montana in a few weeks. I wish October had 8 weeks in it. haven't seen an antler on the trail cams in a month. Lots of deer video but all does!!! hoping some buck will come courting soon.

Expecting to get a little time for woodcock before heading west. Lilly seems completely recovered from her surgery last year. I hope she holds up out west and I'm runnig her every night. It won't be long now till the roosters are flying. Have a great year. we've got to go hunting together one of these days.

Lynn

Eight weeks in October...now there's a thought! Good luck in Montana.
All it takes is one hot doe and your property will be crawling with bucks.
I want to treasure every moment of the upcoming pheasant season for a lot of reasons.
Hey I'm in on a hunt together sometime! You'll have to tell me more about your seed business.

Lynn,

How are your wild birds doing in the WPRA? We haven't been in that neck of the woods lately. Hope this winter isn't as bad and LONG as last year. Any new winter food plots?

Fldbred, we have some good food plots this year. We are planning on doing our first inter WPRA trap and transfer. We have an area that we planted a lot of switchgrass 3 years ago and has a good food plot. We have some birds there already but we want to jump start it with some additional birds. Last winter was pretty hard on them so we're hoping for less snow this year.
