Pheasant shooting Ireland + porpoises

Here is a video of our first proper outing on the pheasant syndicate this year. The weather was unseasonably warm & the cover is still high so we didn't have a great day.

The highlight of the day was a large pod of porpoises breaking the surface along the coast when we were shooting. Unfortunately a lot of them were too far out in the sea to pick up on the head cam, but you may notice some of them.

I was trying my new sj4000 camera for the first time & I was impressed by the clarity of it, especially considering how cheap it was.

I hope you enjoy!!!

Thanks for watching guys. Feel free to share the videos with your friends.

Ollie,
Are most of your hunts driven style or do you do "walk up" gunning with a dog at all? Also, do you do any gunning for waterfowl, shorebirds (snipe, woodcock, curlew, etc.)?

Just intrigued at what type of birds you gun for in addition to pheasants and wood pigeons?

Slan,
Mike

Mikey,

If you watch these 2 videos they are both involving woodcock:

We do a lot of Woodcock shooting here. They are migratory bird, so they start arriving on our shores at this time of year and the season ends at the end of January. However, the numbers we get depends on weather in other countries, i.e. Russia, Scandanavia, this is where the birds migrate from. Some recent farming practices has meant that we have lost a lot of the local habitat for birds but we still get our fair share.

Most of the pheasants shooting in walked up on our shoot. The members of the shoot is family & close friends so it's not formal like some shoots this side of the pond. We buy the poults at 6 weeks & keep them in a pen until about the middle of September, then let them out into the wild. We normally start shooting them at the start of November. Takes a lot of vermin control, i.e. shooting foxes, crows etc, but it's lots of fun.

If you look on my videos, I have 2 spaniels. A liver & white english springer spaniel & a black cocker spaniel. Spaniels are the best type of dog for the ground we hunt which is mostly hard to hunt and wouldn't be suitable for short coat dogs like pointers.

We get some good shooting at pigeons & crows around late July & August.

Do you hunt Woodcock? I believe the American woodcock is a bit smaller than the european cousin.
