DNR says the Iowa pheasant population is down. Whats the word on the gravel roads? I think my area looks as good as or better than last year.

pheasantaddict heard they were down to but iv been walking the dog and iv seen more around this year then i did last yr here in northwest..

I saw 2broods while traveling in NW Iowa in the middle of the day. The terrain is similar to where I live NW of Sioux Falls where I am seeing a lot of late hatch.

Unfortunately, I think we have to assume the information from the DNR is accurate. No matter how imperfect their data, it should be more reflective than our anecdotal reports. I also suspect any bias in the report would be to the positive. pheasantaddict, you are just going to have to hunt harder, or go hungry.

Even if pheasant pop. is down, we know for sure the # of pheasant hunters in Iowa has declined dramatically. Less hunters and a late harvest, I suspect I will make it through another Iowa winter feasting on pheasant. Just save me a few SC birds even if you have to miss on purpose.

I've bumped birds on training runs this late summer/fall, in areas that I did not see any in the 08-09 season. I'm going to Kossuth County tomorrow a.m. to run my uninjured Brit in my honey hole. Got my fingers crossed and will report back.

i ran my britt this morning in central iowa in one hr. he pointed 2 roosters and one big hen. on the way back to my truck i was walking on the gravel road and saw 2 more roosters run across the road. this was on public hunting grounds. just remember alot of crops came out real late last year that didnt help. im thinking the crops will pull on time or early this year just cause its been pretty dry this last month and a half. is anybody gonna take advantage of hunting in nebraska this year? i seen on the news that if you posses an iowa licence it will permitt you to hunt ringnecks and bobwhites in nebraska this season.

Been working the dogs alot since Sept. on public ground. Lately, towards the evening when the birds are coming out of the corn have gotten some good work on 20-50 birds a time. There's some birds out there.

Don't worry about IA # just cross the border with niceshot and I. Niceshot will probably give you all his hunting spots. I heard he is not hunting this year
in honor of Obama winning the peace prize.

I think the NW part of the state is supposed to have the best hunting this fall, no?

Where did you hear this? I may have to do that.

With all the moisture we have had recently and with more in the forecast, no one will really know bird numbers for a long time. With only 2 weeks until the opener I would guess hunting will be very tough for the first month of the season. This is in NW Iowa, I hope you guys in the rest of the state have better luck. It actually started raining while I was reading this thread.

The reciprocal agreement with Nebrask is for certain public areas that border the MO river.

I have seen

alot of birds while training this year also .Actually seeing more quail than in the last few years.
