Pheasant openers

With all the corn that is expected to still be in the fields on the various openers and likely well into the season around the midwest, is everyone who normally hunt the openers still planning to do so?

Last year the crops were out later than when we went, and it was my first time in South Dakota. I went with friends that had almost 20 years experience. 90% of the crops were still in the field. According to them it was more work digging out a limit, but as far as I was concerned it was fantastic.

We are going even earlier this year, and back around Halloween. I'm expecting to do lots of walking and the same type of action. For me, the hunts means more if its not just shooting. My dogs are ready. :)

I will be out Oct 17 for the WI opener. Have a couple more weeks of last minuet training with the pups. Hope we are all ready.

It's been tradition for as long as I can remember to hunt the pheasant opener in South Dakota. Of course, I'm from there originally, but love going back for the pheasant opener. I'm always a little weary about the temperature, because of the dogs. You never know in South Dakota, I believe it was 2-3 years ago, the pheasant opener was about 25 degrees and snow on the ground. Normally it's about 60 degrees or so. Of course, a few years ago, very sad year because of all the dogs that died in SD, when it was 85 degrees. I also turn around and hunt over Halloween weekend, temperature is usually in the 50's and even 60's. Dakota, my lab definately prefers it cold.

Just finished opening morning here in Massachusetts (pause while the laughter dies down). Our limit here is two, and I was out of the woods with a heavy game bag at 0930. One of these days I'll move to where pheasant hunting is better, but I'm making do with what I've got.

Usually our group goes out the second weekend here in ks, we try to avoid some of the chaos and crowds. But we forgot that the season was being pushed back another week here so we booked the house we stay at for the opening weekend! Guess we'll have to deal with the crowds, oh well the trigger finger is gettin itchy!
