I've also heard them called "dead bird". Quite often in fact, probably more than any other name. At least my dog thinks that is what we call them most of the time.
Isn't it funny that when the bird is actually dead our dogs usually have no problem fetching it, but when a peppered rooster is running around the slew like a Tasmanian devil we repeatedly yell dead bird like a madman. Our dogs must think we're crazy. Sometimes on the verge of tears I plead with the pheasant gods "dedbrrrd!!!!".
