Pheasant Hunting During Deer Rifle Season

While in the process of 9 guys deciding what week to come up to your fine state, we have narrowed it down to 1 of 3 weeks. The 1st week of Dec. would be great bacause not only could we upland bird hunt but we could also waterfowl hunt. But rifle season for deer is also on. We duck hunt on Cedar Bluff. Can you duck hunt while firearm deer season is on?
Our other concern was phez hunting on many of the walk-in areas in the region. Is deer hunter pressure typically interfering with good upland hunts?

Road hunting for deer is a strong tradition in South Dakota practiced by many. I'd be very cautious if hunting pheasants during deer season.

Pheasant Hunting in Deer Season

I hunt pheasant throughout deer season in Kansas every year. I hunt in NW Kansas which is open high plains country. Although not required by law, my fellow hunters and I wear some blaze orange too. Never had a problem.

It's not for me. I've never been shot and neither have my dogs upland hunting during deer season and we never will be. I've seen too much stupid, unsafe acts during deer rifle season. A man wearing red under his camo was mistaken for a turkey at less than 30 yards recently in Pennsylvania. I'm not taking my brown dogs out that time of year and frankly, I don't even trust some folks not to shoot me w/ my blaze orange on. This is my personal opinion on it. I know there are plenty of folks that go upland bird hunting during rifle season and live to tell about it.....I just ain't taking a chance of being one of the guys that doesn't.

Well said kansasbrittany,
I consider rifle deer season my weekend off for pheasants. All it takes is the guy deer hunting in the next section to take a shot and you being at the wrong place at the wrong time. Shooting a few roosters isnt worth the chance. Plus, during deer rifle season, good luck finding walkin or public land without trucks parked next to them, obviously deer hunters. Before I decided to take that week off I was quail hunting around a lake and there was a truck parked about every quarter mile. I decided to call it a day by 8 am. Again, not worth the risk IMO, there will always be another weekend.

Besides Roosterbuck, it's a great time to catch some big crappie if the water isn't frozen. You got the entire lake to yourself and you don't catch the tiny ones that time of year.
