Pheasant distribution question

Growing up in the woods of Missouri, Pheasants are still fairly new to me. I now live in east central Kansas and was wondering why there is no Pheasant population here. They are to the north and west of us. I have hunted these locations and the crops, terrain, availability of water and cover all seem to be very similar. Can anyone answer this question for me? All answers and wives' tales would be appreciated. Thanks!

Arrow, no difinitive answer for you as I don't frequent that neck of the woods. Even in SD there are certainly many pockets of low to know birds. As general rule of thumb I would say the key components to good bird numbers are grass and insects for nesting and brood development. Not much beats a good old weed patch.

You might also try to post in the Kansas forum as I see there is some activity there and you might get better regional info from the locals.

Take Care!
