PF road hunting article on violations & dangers.

Why do they lump together ditch hunting (walking the ditches) with road hunting (driving along with loaded guns and jumping out to shoot birds)? I for one very much enjoy ditch hunting the right of ways on foot. It seems to me that "road hunting" from a vehicle is much more dangerous and causes a lot more grief to locals than simply ditch hunting on foot. Maybe they should have some separate language for road hunting from a vehicle vs. ditch hunting on foot. I know there would be some grey area like how far you are away from your vehicle etc. but I believe in practice there is a big difference between the two. Any comments???

I agree with your stance Thor. A woman was killed early this season road hunting. Her boy friend jumped out of the car and in the deal. She got shot. That should be proof enough that road hunting from cars is very dangerous........Bob

Yes it is a bad deal all togeather to allow loaded guns in a car. I had a guy get in to drive once out west and he never unloaded. He banged his gun on the steering wheel on the way in. It scared the hell out of me looking down the barrel of a 12ga. I chewed his ass. And don't hunt with him anymore.

This should be proof that hunting from vehicles is very dangerous.....? Maybe we should ban block party hunting with blockers too. Seems to me more people visit our ER's every year with pellet wounds from walkers blasting away without seeing sky before pulling the trigger. Last year there were 30 accidents related to upland hunting, while only 3 from people exiting a vehicle with a loaded weapon. Here is a link below to see what I am referring to. I agree that jumping from vehicles with loaded guns is probably not the smartest way to hunt, but fine tuning the laws would be a better option than banning road hunting. Believe it or not, road hunting is a tradition to many in this state, even more so with all the pay hunting these days.

A few years back SD finally got smart and fine tuned the road hunting issue a little. In the old days of the J-slide, doors flinging open and people piling out of the vehicle, SD took a stance and altered the rules. Today the vehicle needs to be stopped to the side of the road, vehicle off, and doors closed to be considered legal. What would be so wrong with adding no loaded guns in the vehicle? Loading the gun after exiting the vehicle would be a good option to keep people from pulling the trigger exiting the vehicle. Might be a nightmare to enforce, but so are alot of the other rules in the book.....JMO

Law or no law, no excuse for having a loaded gun in a car..... or a combine, as on another post. Rest assured, I'll stay as far away from these people as possible until natural selection weeds the dumbies out of the gene pool.

Skidmark. You are comparing the same thing. Stupid, Greedy hunters. Those that disregard Saftey in favor of the shot. Are just what I said, nothing more. The people they hunt with should be the ones to teach them the proper Safe way to hunt......Bob

Show us link of that actually happening. I don't think it was road hunting, but rather getting out of a vehicle with a loaded gun. Do you know how many shooting accidents happen opening day in SD....They are not from road hunting. jmo

The most dangerous hunting to me is with young or older hunters in groups that didn't take a hunters safety course. jmo

Have you ever watched a political commercial where the politician pretends he's outdoorsey and shows him walking with a pheasant, dog, and gun pointing parallel to the ground and at everyone in front of him including the camera crew:confused: Drives me nuts to see anyone pointing a gun towards someone.

That can go both ways:rolleyes: Here is another example from our current season. Group hunting with loaded guns;)

Some guys prefer walking towards blockers shooting away, while the blockers are shooting back. To each their own choice I guess as long if it is legal. jmo

I love walking ditches with my kid all day, but at sundown its time for a slow drive down the road visiting about a great day while looking for one last ditch parrot to finish the day. ;)

In Illinois we don't have roadside hunting and all guns have to be unloaded and fully cased when transported in a vehicle. The ditches here are mowed and all of the fields are baren and disked and no fencelines. :)

I dont know if it's still legal but if I remember right when I was in Montana elk hunting about 10 years ago you could shoot out your car window with a beer / drink at the same time.
