Pay to play

Just spent the day hunting around Aberdeen on the same private we always do. All day, 1 shot, 3 guys, 1 bird. Did see a few hens, thank god. Thinking about paying an access fee on a place we saw birds. Never thought I would say that.

Access Fee

What is the going rate for a trespass fee, or does it vary a lot? Is a $100 per gun reasonable to offer?

$100 is as cheap as you will find and it may be tough to find it that low. It goes from there up to $300. I know, it's nuts. But as long as someone is willing to pay the price the rates just keep going up.

Reasonable access fee? Check the "U-Guide" listings on this site - it may give you an idea about rates. Also, google" pheasant hunting/South Dakota." A number of lodges et al will be listed and their rates; some include meals and lodging.

I agree with Zeb - $100 per day is on the low end...

I had two guys from Wisconsin here yesterday. I said they could hunt for $100 a day said they saw more birds than they had ever seen in their life.

Season's Greetings, Dennis:

Kudos to you for reasonable rates! Glad your hunters could observe the flocks and had success. Would assume the rates earlier in the season are much higher...

Yes Jon earlier in the season we do a package deal. I don't like to book after mid December because of unknown weather, so I will take hunters on a trespass fee basis if the weather is good. I try to keep it affordable but every body has a different idea as to what affordable is. I have not seen any prices lower than mine at any time of the year. Maybe I am too cheap as I was booked for next year before Christmas.

If you want the "South Dakota" experience, it's pay to play. As the public hunting gets worse and worse each passing year , trespass fees will just go up and up. $100 per gun is "very reasonable" in today's market.
