Pass it on, take a youth hunting

I am totally stoked.....My 11yrd old son will be hunting (actually shooting a 20gauge) this year with me pheasant hunting out in southwest Kansas.

Last year I took him and he had his BB gun and I put an orange vest and hat on him and let him trail along while we walked or blocked. I didn't feel he was ready (he was 10yrs old) and had not taken hunters education yet. He is now in the 6th grade, his reading level and comprehension is better and I feel he is just a little bit more mature were he is ready.

Last year when I took him, I talked to him alot about the rules and regulations, the do's and don'ts, and just tried to mentor him. Like my Papa did to me.

So he takes his hunters education this Friday and Saturday. We are going to go out and shoot some clay birds the weekend of Halloween.

Next year I am going to take him out on youth day for waterfowl and also upland.

We have to keep our traditions alive and well. Through our children, grandchildren, cousins, nephews, friends kids or whatever, we must pass it on.

Congratulations Sir! Good to hear:thumbsup:

This year is the last year my cousin will be eligible for the youth hunt. We've been doing it for several years now and every trip was great. He'll shoot his 2 pretty quick this year so we'll be back home early. Now if my 8yo would just get a bit more excited about shooting the gun:rolleyes: Well, he's been spending time learning how to run the video camera and says that's gonna be his "job" while we're hunting. I'm just happy he wants be out there with me:)

Great Job Greg!

I hope everyone takes his words to heart!

And if you don't have a son or daughter, grandson or granddaughter, there are plenty of other kids!

If you are having trouble hooking up with one, give me a call and I'll bend your ear about the Pass It On - Outdoor Mentors program!

Happy Hunting!

2 out 0f 3 ain't bad

I have 3 step sons. 2 out of 3 have already show and interest. The 3rd aleast likes to fish. I just can't wait till they are old enough to be the dog handlers too!!!!

took Little Turtle out west last year thinking he would walk the first spot then block with his Grampy rest of trip. Wrong to the tenth power. At seven he out walked most in the group in the cover. Nothing was to tough for him. He will be packing his "new 390 Beretta" 20 this year on some of the walks. There is nothing more enjoyable than watching a kid discover what we already know.. Roosters rock. Good Hunting to all esp. those who will take a kid.

My 11 year daughter took her hunter's safety class last weekend, so I hope she walks a few fields with me in Kansas. We had a great time taking the test together, and I hope she chooses to hunt the rest of her life.

I have been taking my 7 and 5 year old with me to Kansas the last two years with their grandpa. They walk the fields and get to see the dog work we practice all year in the yard. Hunter 94 has experienced these two little wild indians in the field and he has the patience of Jobe! In a few more years they will be walking the fields and 94 and I will be blocking! I can't think of anything better than to pass on the sport of hunting to my sons. HAve a great opener with your kids!

I love it! Getting these young people involved is what it is all about. My 9 year and 6 year old daughters are begging me to take them. Thier mom is having no part of that, YET! I bought both of them pink rifles and pink shotguns last year for X-mas. They love shooting and the 6 year old has a real dead eye. I can't wait until the year that we pack the truck and the four of us, Me, Maggie (9), Emma (8), and the dog Jenny drag my wife kicking and screaming to the field out west for a week of hunting and camping. I can think of nothing better. Congrates to all you that are hunting with the sportsmen of tomorrow! and Salute!

Greg that great, I have 4yrs before my boys are old enough to go. :(

Well with my son only being 2 1/2 this season I think he will be a bit too small to tag along:) On the other hand my wife just finished her hunters education and is just as stoked as me if not more to go chase some roosters through the grass. In time I will take my son but for now it will be me and momma and in all honesty I can't wait.

When I first started going hunting with my Dad it was only dear hunting. I normally slept in the bottom of the blind. and would wake up in time to go walk in and have breakfast with Gramma.(I was like 7 or 8)

My Dads favorite hunting story is about my brother he was 7 or 8 and was sitting the blind with my Dad and saw a buck before my dad had seen it and looked at him and started yelling excitidly ''LOOK DADDY IT'S A BUCK! IT'S A BUCK!" Needless to say he didn't get.

Keep passing it on I'm glad my Dad did and my brother and I will too!:10sign:

I love this time of year, I get more satisfaction from youth weekend than opening day. Watching the dogs and my 10 year old is what it is all about. This will be his 3rd year hunting. He has shot a bird each year since he was 7 and the way they light up is what it is about.

He got his own hunting dog last year, his springer was a little lost as a 9 month old last season but showed promise. I took the pup to North Dakota for the opener 2 weekends ago and the dog was lights out awsome. 88 degrees and he did not miss a beat. My son is excited his dog maybe better than mine.

This builds a lifetime of memory's. Keep passing it on!

My son completed his Hunter's Education this past weekend here in Colorado Springs, CO.

I did not think it was a good idea to let him handle a shotgun or actually hunt himself with anything other than a BB gun until he had done that.

Also in the state of Colorado you have to have completed a hunters education course to get your license and the minimum age to hunt big game in the state is 12yrs of age and in colorado there is no minimum age for small game however you must have completed a hunters education course and passed the 50 question test.

So, he and I are getting ready for our Kansas hunt this year come the second weekend of November.

I am taking him this Saturday to shoot his 20gauge at some trap and skeet.....

Good luck to all,

Greg

Sounds like we all have a good start. I took my two girls 10 & 11 out in the field at the house (20 acres) last night. Two hens, a rooster out of gun range. But they show a intreast in the dog work at least.

Last year I had them each out in the yard pass shooting some geese. droped one for each of them. My youngest said " wow dad this is almost like Iam shooting them". The giant canada droped about 10 feet from her. Thank god it did't hit her she is about 50 lbs soaking wet right now but I think she will be my future partner. The other one might be too sensitive. she does't have a problem with it just I dont think she will pull the trigger, we will see to early to tell yet.

Wife even said we all should go on a local hunt together.:D

You are a very lucky man indeed!

well if the girls are hunting then you wont have to worry about them chasing boys and when they marry at least they will marry hunters it a win win situation in my opinion

Can't agree more I know first hand when you marry it sure helps when your spouses family are hunters. They understand what we get out of it and are happy for us to go;) I married a good one:10sign::10sign:
