Partners to share lodge / farm.....Kansas2011

Hello,

I am posting this again....as the main group of guys....have backed out.
Unfortunately they had a work issue come up.

So here I go again...

If anyone is interested.....We have access to a great lodge / farm in Kansas.
December 12th thru 18th.

I have hunted there every year from 1998 thru 2009.
Weather can be a factor....but I like it cold....some snow is awesome for hunting!

Aprox. 7K acres of land w/ a mix of crp, pasture, wheat and milo stubble.
Plumb thickets galore and some bottom land.
House is modern w/ sat tv, 5 bedrooms and full kitchen and bbq grill, mud room, deep freezer for birds...

What I am looking for:
1. I do not want a big group.....4-6 guys would be good.
2. Would like to invite guys w/ similar hunting style, interests and ethics.
3. Lodge is dog friendly or u can kennel them outside or leave in your truck.
4. We usually pack in our own food and prepare meals there.
5. Nearest town w/ grocery and restaurant is about 25 miles.

House rents for $1,200 per week.....which is very reasonable split 4-6 ways.

All wild birds and conditions can be rough....lots of hard walking.
Great if you really love a challenge and working for your birds!

This is a working farm / ranch and the owners do not run a hunting operation.
They rent out the house and give access to their land.

There are numerous WHIA tracts close by and several public WMA's also.

Please pm me if interested and December 12th thru 18th works for you....

Lodge is also a great place for staging day trips to other regions of Kansas for scouting and hunting new lands.

It is really nice, clean and way above average.

Kansas Hunting

I have had a couple requests for photos of the lodge and area we hunt.

Go to photobucket and search for highbrass68 under users tab...

I have about 50 pics from last years trip to Kansas.

Currently I do not have and pics on photobucket of the house/lodge.
I will try to dig some up and post.

Apoloigies for not being much of a photog....wife bought me a nice cannon rebel digital and I am still learning how to use the damn thing.

And like you guys....once I start hunting, I usually forget to shoot pics.

Let me know if there are any more questions...

Rusty,

I have 2 Llew setters.....
However my oldest Hank is 11 and Buddy is 6.
These are my first 2 birddogs.....as I had labs and springers as a kid in Nebraska.

Both of my setters are bird finding machines and retrieve to hand.
However....buddy is not a natural backer and I usually hunt him alone.
Hank is a fine setter....but age is starting to really slow him down.

Short answer.....I have access to really great habitat, know where the birds are. but am kind of weak in the dog dept.

Wife and I are discussing......me getting a pup or 2!!

We hunt English Pointers and GSP. Have plenty of dog power. I have a litter of EPs at this time. PM me for details if interested. I may be interested in this hunt you are planning.

What Area

Place sounds interesting and reasonable. What area of KS > name of nearest town? Usually try to also do week hunt in January when weather gets nasty and MT season is closed. How about that time also? Hunt this yr. 5 yr. male black lab and 5 mo. choc. male I hope. My black points if they are holding > started doing this last season (quail and pheas) Never trained for it he just started > was shocked! FYI: Breeding him again in July w friends small black, I got pick last year and all pups made great hunters and w sweet dispositioin. DYNOMITE small labs. Pure bred but no papers > last yr he sold 10 pups $100 ea. (Giant litter of 12 and all made it fine). Hope this yr in KS will be good > hearing discouraging reports about nesting cover????

Forgot to ask

Can 2 guys double up in 1 BR for rate of 1 (should change my name to cheapo)? I come from MT and nephew meets me from Arkansas. My dog/s are just hunters with non pro trainers

Week after Thanksgiving

HighBrass,
I have been hunting in Kansas for years now and the last 3 years along with my son and son in law spend the week after Thanksgiving hunting the walk in areas with pretty good success. I have 2 english setters and 1 red setter and will probably be bringing a young golden retriever this coming year as well. I would be enterested in joining up with you at the lodge for that week. We are experienced hunters and the dog work is more important than limits. Please let me know where the lodge is located and if possible PM me with a phone number so that we can talk. Thanks.

Apologies for late reply to all....

Hello to all who have expressed interest in the trip.

I am just now returning emails and phone calls...

I have not yet secured a date, but am shooting for either the week after Thanksgiving or around Dec. 12th which falls right after the end of deer gun season...as the lodge will not be available during deer (gun) season.

My opinion is that going later in the season is more challenging, less pressure and colder weather= good times for all!

Please feel free to contact me w/ any questions....

Farm house camp

You're absolutely correct, later, colder, snowier is the best hunting hands down! Don't recall any comment about January availability. Good area and great thickets. Hunted that area 16 yrs ago and did very well. Usually stay in old motel in Norton but you got my interest. Any idea on what you think the bird numbers are looking like this year? Coming from Montana.

HB68, Please pm me a message about this message as would like to be included in your hunt but dont want to worm my way in and we need to talk some more to see if we can enjoy hunting together. THANKS! jimmyj

old motel in norton no longer open and the bird numbers look decent up their from what i have heard from relatives that farm up there
