Just moved to the DC area recently from colorado. pheasant season is coming just around the corner and other then a trip out to SD for a hunting trip im hoping to find something closer that i can make it two every other weekend or so.

how is the hunting in pa? hows the public/private land?

what about other types of hunting? duck, goose etc, but of course pheasant is most important :p

Your in luck..Hunting in Pa is great for a bunch of game! Pheasant Hunting in Pa is the best it's been in years and it keeps on getting better every year! The Game Commission and Pheasants Forever have been working together to better pheasant hunting and other small game hunting for years now and we are starting to see the benefits! There is an ongoing trap and transfer program that has had success and this year the Game Commission will release 200,000 pheasants! A tremendous amount of habitat work has been done across the state and the birds released into the these areas wise up real quick and provide quality bird hunting! These birds have confused many a bird dog! We have more holdover birds now than we have had in a long time and populations of wild birds in the recovery areas are the largest they have been in a very long time as well!

As far as hunting access..I think Pa is great and offers a hunter a lot of land to hunt on!

This link says it all!

Well, the pheasant hunting in Pa. is going to be different than what your used to in Colorado. While the SGL's will receive ample amounts of stocked pheasants they tend to get pretty crowed on the week-ends. The best bet is to hunt some state stocked Co-Ops, which are farms with suitable habitat that are open to the public. We hunt some of these type of lands and the farmers tell us we are the only ones that hunted their property. It takes some leg work to locate these properties, but it's well worth the effort.
You are located in the middle of some of the finest waterfowl hunting to be found anywhere. In fact, in NJ, the Canadian Goose population has become a nuisance in many areas. Despite long and liberal seasons the "resident" goose populations continues to increase! You're waterfowl hunting opportunities are almost limitless.

great news for sure! i was hoping to have a bird dog by now but due to having to rent thats a no go for the next year... :( im guna have to find some hunting buddies i suppose

thanks for all the info, i cant wait until next month. this should be an interesting fall

I have gone after grouse but I have not had much luck. I live in the southern portion of Pa and the further north you go the better the grouse numbers. I'll go after some woodcock this Saturday closer to home.

I did take a youth out this past Saturday for the State youth hunt. The dogs were able to get 11 birds up and the boy got his 2 bird limit. Looking forward to October 20th.

ah, ok so they are more in the norther portion of Pa...ah well, im trying to also stay on the southern side of Pa as its already 1.5-2 hours to get there

good news about the pheasants, was that on public or private land?

There are some grouse in the southern parts of Pa. There are some in the Michaux State Forest around Franklin county. If you want to stay south I think you have a better chance of finding grouse a little further west. I saw a map with grouse flush rates on it before. I'll have to see if I can find it.

I found the pheasants on public land. I was guiding for a youth on one of the state game lands. The state game lands I go to the most has a good bit of out of state hunters on it during the pheasant season. Mostly from Md. but some from Va.
