Well now it's time to get busy! Now it's for real, the grouse season always starts the season , at least for us adults now. The foilage is usualy a little to thick to start, but still a great time to be in Penns woods. From the reports I've been hearing it should be a good season. Who's heading out?
Good luck to everybody and be safe!

Wish I could get out but I'm too far away from the grouse woods to get back home in time for the boys' football. Good luck Saturday.

If we have a good start to our duck season we'll be out in the afternoon for grouse. If not I might try another spot for the night.. but good luck..Now the fun gets real..:) And this is what we trained all summer for. Let the games begin..

Do you run into any problems with Drake as far as the dual type of training is concerned? It must take some restraint from him to sit in a duck blind after hunting in the uplands.

Good luck to you guys also!

Not at all! he knows what his jobs are in both with a lot of training. The only thing we run into that?s not that good but for him but I let it go. Is hunting on a blind retrieve here and there. Like Saturday if we shoot two birds and he only can see one and the other glided 100-150yrds before dropping when I send him for the blind retrieve after about 75yrds if I blow the sit whistle he will sit and wind the air for a little bit instead of looking at me for directions. I trained him a minimum of four times a week all summer.

That's some good stuff! I've used my Springers for waterfowl before, mostly jump shooting. They do ok, but when it comes to multiple. or long blind retrieves... well I think that's the Labs specialty!
Good luck in the duck marsh and grouse coverts this weekend, it's what we wait for all year!

There will be four of us going. We've been seeing plenty of grouse all year. The hard part for me is hitting them! :D It's going to be great to get back out with the shotgun.

How did things go? It is a beautiful day here with a good breeze. It would have been great to have been in the woods but that's the way it goes. I'll have more time later in the season.

What a day..I thought it was going to be warm but as we neared camp it became overcast and started to rain on and off. A front moved in and the temperatures began drop and it was just a beautiful day to be in the woods! We moved one woodcock and two grouse! Dad missed a difficult shot on the woodcock and the grouse flushed on the other side of a blowdown so there was no shot. Here are some pictures!

Like HollowWatcher said, it was one of those special fall days, brilliant colors, dark skys, and that fall smell! We always do better for grouse later in the season, but we still managed to move a few birds.
But the absolute best part "no not the cheese steak lunch" was that Dugan had his legs about him! It was a good work out and he held up fine. That's not good news for a lot of Roosters next week!
We also saw three nice bucks!

Glad to hear that Dugan held up well. Do you give him anything to help with soreness after the hunt? Sometimes I'll give Nittany an aspirin to help with some soreness/stiffness after hunting. I've had the dogs out 3 times this week with youth season and a preserve hunt and he's done fine while hunting but he sure likes to rest when we're done.

Only if it's absolutely necessary, so far this morning he's doing fine so I won't.
We were lucky to move a few birds, but thinking back on past openers I would flush over two dozen birds from the same locations and the habitat in some of these spots is even better now due to management and forest clearings. The life story of Ole Mr. Grouse sure is interesting!

You mentioned getting a pup this winter, if so, same breed?

HollowWatcher,

Great report, you're right it was a perfect fall day! We flushed 11 grouse behind a friends Britany, we only got one of those birds.
The cheese steak lunch is making me hungry!:D

Fldbred,
Glad to hear your springer is feeling better!

Yes, we are looking at another vizsla. It won't be from the same breeder, though. The breeders we got Nittany and Blitz from won't be doing any breeding for a while but the pointed us in the right direction. We are looking at a pup from the Semper Fi lines in Virginia. Al and Terry Lucas are the breeders and they do field trials and show rings with their dogs. They have some dual champions, field trial champions and a long line of good dogs. I think the litter they will have will produce some good foot hunting dogs but the pups will be evaluated when they are around 5 or 6 weeks old and I'll go from there.

Sounds like a great day it?s not always about the kill some people just don?t get that. Cover looked really nice glad Dugan?s doing well. I?m very jealous you getting a pup bauerline new chapter it your life that?s great. We didn?t make it out grouse hunting with the high water drake really had a work out. One time we had to get him with the boat because he couldn?t make it back to us with the current being so fast and he wouldn?t give up. But we had a great day any day in the woods or water with your dog is a great day to me. If it?s not raining bad Wednesday were going to try to get out for some grouse and woodcock..

Way to go guys, looks like you had a full game bag! :coolpics:
Some of those long retrieves can be real scary, lucky thing you had a boat with you. I can remember some tricky times with fast currents and ice. If you go Wednesday, good luck and be safe!

Very nice fellas. Those sure are some beautiful woods you all have and I'm glad Dugan moved some birds for you and that he's feeling good. How old is Dugan?
