P dog info?

I know, this is a pheasant forum.....but I'm looking to kill some time between pheasant hunts, while the dogs rest.
My cousin's and I are heading to the De Smet area in early November for some outdoor adventures.
Could any one point me in the direction of getting on some P-dogs while we're in SD?
I've done some research, and know that most of them are found in the western part of the state, but I'm curious if we might be able to find some closer to where we'll be staying.

Thanks,
J

Probably a little late for some prairie dog hunting. Besides, you will find none in the DeSmet area or probably within 100 miles of DeSmet. In general you will have to get west of the Missouri River to find good numbers of prairie dogs.

I'm not too worried about driving a little.
I figure we could make a day of it....driving out to a p-dog area, while stopping at a few public spots for birds.

Does any one know what area we should go to, to even start looking?
Any near by towns, where we could start?

I'm just itching to shoot some with a new toy

Probably gonna have to pay the natives. I would go to Eagle Butte or that general direction. Driving through that area last fall I saw many dog towns.

You start getting into the dogs along I90 pretty good at about Presho.I would suggest the grassland S of pierre. If it's sunny, you will see some dogs.As far as up North, you probably have to get west river, around the Cheyenne River reservation.

Ft Pierre National Grasslands has some dogs on public land. Call the main office. There is a wonderful lady there who is a Bird hunter and will be glad to help you out. They'll set you with a map and get you going.

Thanks for the info!
I'll called and talked to Carol, and got some good info/details.
After a few days of hunting, I'm sure the dogs will be whooped. So it will give them a nice rest, while we put down some p-dogs.

Good deal. Glad to help. We may try the same thing this year. We also have a pice of WIA we know about on Crow Creek that has a small dog town. Easy road access and short range for the kid to shoot a few.

I'm not much of a P-dog man but when do the dogs start to hibernate? Won't they be pretty much holed up by early November? Depending on the weather of course.

I was off I-90 at Murdo and a little east. Many towns full of the little buggers out sunning themselves on sunday afternoon
