Opening day

Opening day is less than a month away!:D. Where do you plan on hunting? I think I will either stay around central iowa or I may make the drive up to NW iowa.

We'll let things calm down after the opener and go later when all crops are off. I have the benefit of living in good grouse and woodcock country, so hunt hard from now until November when we head to IA for the annual hunt. There's no pressure felt to have to be there for the opener.

Too bad "opener" isn't what it used to be, but I'm guessing we will be out....unless for some reason it is still 80 degrees.

Opener

I am getting my dog this winter. I am going to work all spring and summer to have it ready to hunt next fall. My question is about this year. I don't have a dog. Is it even worth going out and trying to hunt? I would love to go, but I don't want to go out with no chance.

I say go for it.. Theres always a chance. It will make you appreciate your dog and the work you put into it next year.

As for me... no plans as of yet for the opener.

Where are you located? You'd be welcome to join us for a morning if you're close.

waaaay to much corn in the ground still,,, and waaay to much rain, it needs to dry out so farmers can get the corn pulled. took the dog out to some of my spots today, its beautiful out today:10sign:

Thanks btomlin - don't make me blush!

The dog is sure ready to get out and work. I've been getting the death stare every time I leave with the gun to duck hunt. Our youth hunt is this Saturday... then we only have to wait 2 more weeks!

I have been running the dog on public land in Pott County and she has put a lot of birds up. I will spend the opener close to home then head up north when things calm down.

Why is this Iowa group so quiet? Is everyone staying home tomorrow? I have to work tomorrow and maybe Sunday so im not sure if I will hunt opening weekend. What are your plans?

Opening day!

I, one of my son's a grand son (first time actually hunting) and a grand daughter will hit the field on the home farm tomorrow. We'll take the new pup and we go slow and not too long since it will get warm fast. I try to make it a big deal for the kids (breakfast in the field, snack and drinks, pics too). I know there are some birds there, we'll see.....

Be safe everyone!

Sounds like a great time! My grandpas brother always used to have a big thing for opening day on his farm. We would hunt early morning, eat a big family meal 30 people or so and then hunt the rest of the afternoon. We didn't have any dogs and shot LOTS of birds. This was in butler county in the 90's. I just turned 31 this month and really miss those days. A lot of the family is older or doesn't hunt anymore so we don't have the big family get together.

It's all about making memories.... Good luck everyone!!!!!!

just came home from my opener spots and all the corn is still in the ground and no sighns of any combines:( sooooo im not gonna bother going the weather is going to soar into the mid 70's with a low of only 56. im gonna wait until it cools off a bit and some crops get picked, i know im a wuss:thumbsup:

I'll be up early. Always went hunting with my Dad, Uncle, Mom when I was little. I picked it up about 2 years ago but gave up since spent so much time and not seeing one bird. This year decided to drive around and couldn't believe how many I saw. I'll be up early and hopefully get my first pheasant.

I think I'll sit the opener out ! I just there's going to be to many locals and out of staters for my liking. There's also what seems like 80-90% of the corn in yet. The biggest factor is my dog. It's going to be way to warm for him.

Well that was pretty much pointless. Wrnt to all the farms that i saw the pheasants and lknowbody would let you walk there fields. I remember back hunting with the family knowbody cared

Ive noticed this. The only fields in the area that didnt have corn was the ones with pheasants but farmers wouldnt let me hunt.
