opening day weekend just ahead.

Opener Report

I went out Saturday on public and found 3 roosters (being the strong conservationist I am, they are all still out in the field).

Went out Sunday afternoon for 2 hours and flushed nothing.

Hunted Monday morning and had a shot at 4 roosters. I missed 2, put 1 in the bag and crippled 1 that we never found.

I'm definitely not hurting the bird population this year :)

First Tuesday of opening week

Twenty seven degrees overnight, not much warmer until afternoon, but enduring had its benefits.

Pheasants were flushing 100+ yards ahead of me, and sixty or more yards ahead of Mick. Can't remember when they ran so far, so fast, and just refused to get up in the air.

Three and one half-hours later, winter hat and gloves in the game bag, my legs were having serious discussions with my brain, to the point where they were using air quotes when using the term "intelligence."

A nice day.

Today was a fun day.

Took a guy I work with out mostly hoping to jump some ducks and he was able to shoot his first pointed pheasant.

We ended up with 3 pheasants and a pair of wood ducks.

I agree they were jumpy today, the bigger of these 2 birds was about a 70 yard shot according to the astro.

Great pic kismet.

The Warden didn't enforce the blaze orange rules?

I believe blaze orange is only mandated during gun deer season. It is optional other times, although week-ends at public grounds I wear it.

and thanks, WisTurk

Got lucky. Today's pictures...if they load.
(Let me know if too many pictures, I'm just happy.)

I took out the Hercules 12ga full single to rein in my emptying both barrels at a far-flying bird behavior of Monday. Seemed to work, but these were the only two birds we moved, and Mick found them at the very end of the property, where legs go to die. :)

The white knob on the hammer is to give a gloved hand something to pull back; conventional after-market ones kept on slipping off.

Thank you, quail hound. It was wonderful.

Nice photos guys:thumbsup: Sounds like a few of you are really enjoying your experience in the field.

Thanks for posting:)

And the sun's not even high in the sky! Congratulations.

How'd they hold for your GWP? (I still miss mine; give yours a biscuit for me, will you?)

We weren't able to get to the far side of the field to get the wind perfect like I'd have preferred so some birds did get run over but both dogs (we also had a britt) got some pointing in.

I'll give him some pheasant...

Wisturkeyhunter what are seeing as far as age goes on the wild birds up there? Are you bumping any abnormally young birds?

Nick

I've not killed anything that wasn't fully colored and have only seen 1 rooster that wasn't fully colored as far as I have been able to tell. That was during the opener and I had already limited. 1 bird today had some pin'ish feathers on the neck and it was slightly smaller than the other birds. A few days ago it might have not been fully colored. I really don't know how fast they change?

I was seeing some very young birds the 2 weeks before the season but they color up pretty fast or they are avoiding me.
