Hey everyone,

With opening day fast approaching I just would like to wish every one good luck. I am taking my dog for a warm hunt at a game farm on thursday. Cant wait to share stories.

Good luck and be safe.

Good luck to all that are going out!

I won't be able to go this weekend as I am taking my family on vacation, but as soon as I get home I tend to be out. Sounds like my father may be taking my dog, so at least somebody will have some fun.

Opening Weekend

I'm going to walk a few drainage ditches etc. on private land this opener....lots of crops standing, just few bean fields and silage corn harvested so far.The public land will be busy for the opener but I will start hunting that during the week on off from work days and on weekends after the early season rush is over. Good Luck To Everyone!

From what I've heard of weather report, opener should be wet. I'm sure birds will be put out on State properties, but imagine the crowd of opening week-end hunters will be down. Might mean that the week days after opener will have some birds.

I'll go to what remaining private land is available to me for the weekend, then go public ground hunting during the week, as I can. It has been years since I went to public grounds on the opening week-end.

Have fun, be safe.

lots of people i have been talking to are going to be either deer or duck hunting this weekend instead of pheasant, so maybe the public land won't be all that bad??

I kinda feel for you Southern WI guys. We've been out since the grouse opener in September, getting in some good dog work and shooting some birds. I sure remember my teen years hunting pheasants outside Burlington, though. I often wonder what our old hunting spots look like these days and whether they hold any birds.

It will be a bit before I get out. Next weekend Im taking another teip up north then headed to Montana for a week or so. Cold weather looks to be on the way! Rooster weather!!

I'll avoid the noon start today and head out early tomorrow morning to a few spots that tend to be less crowded. If you're willing to walk further and through nastier stuff than the average guy there are lots of pheasants to be found on public land. I've enjoyed chasing grouse and woodcock the past month in N WI but I'm looking forward to not having to pick ticks off myself and my dogs after each hunt. Last weekend was especially bad.

Well no birds Saturday and one flush. But on a good note took my two this morning.

Livernwhite I think you mean you got a rooster and a woodcock or a dove or something because daily bag on pheasants for opening weekend is only one per day.

Was out with Mick for a couple of hours Saturday afternoon; we moved a hen and a rooster on private land.

Hen came up a hundred yards or more away, but the rooster popped up along a fence-line on the high slope and flushed directly at me, flying towards me about 30 feet off the ground towards me at the bottom of the slope. What a silly bird!

Being the elderly, experienced, and wise hunter I am, I remained calm, straightened my line to the bird, brought the double sxs up, and carefully

shot behind it two times as it flew over my head.

Pheasant season has begun!!!

:D

It was nice to be out; I caught two of the sunny hours on Saturday.

Be safe, have fun.

Nice report Kismet!

I wasn't able to get out on Saturday, but did go yesterday morning in western Waukesha county. Part of the fun (and struggle) of hunting two flushers together is when they scent a bird....which of the two do I watch the most closely? Do I watch the older, and more solid but slower pup, or do I watch my youngest who is really coming into her own?

After a while, they got on one but the scent was apparently initially somewhat weak, as they were both birdy but not hot. They worked the trail along a field transition area (two different weed/cover types next to one another) and the scent apparently got stronger as they both got real birdy.

Its been a while since I've had that feeling of anticipation of a flush with two really birdy dogs in front of me. LOVE THAT FEELING! The older dog finally put Mr. Rooster up. It was a beautiful flush, the bird cutting to the right in front of me, cackling the whole time. One shot and it was over, a beautiful bird in hand and a great start to the season.

a crazy opening day

I started off on public land theresa which was a mistake. I have never seen the place so jamed packed with people so i left and went to private and got my bird do it was a good day after all

A friend of mine hunted Allenton Marsh on Sunday. He spoke to another guy who claimed that on the opener, somebody apparently got shot sprayed pretty good to the point an ambulance was called. I don't have any more details than that, but this is exactly why I give any other hunter/group a very wide berth if I come across them in the field.

I own land right on Theresa Marsh and I won't hunt our place on opening weekend.

It's like the wild west or maybe more accurately like Englewood in Chicago on a hot Saturday night.

Opening Weekend

I hunted late Sunday afternoon on public land in Dodge County. It was drizzling the whole time. My young ESS who just turned a year old today put up a Rooster. The bird flushed and went about 20ft. went down and the dog flushed him again. He flew low to the ground crossing and angling away, By the time I got a shot it was a long one and I didn't get him. I also heard 2 other Roosters cackling just across the property line on private land....so close yet so far.....

My dad went on public land the sunday after opener. He said it wasn't bad at all for hunters but the ones he talked to said it was a zoo on saturday. State land where released birds. He got his one for the day. He had 3 flushes that day. Had 3 the second day and got one bird that day as well.
