Opening day for the youngsters

Well today is opening day for all youth in Missouri. I loaded up the 3 girls, 13, 13, (twins), and 7 year old. Went to Bilby. We were the only youth hunters hunting upland. Tons of duck hunters, the parking lot at the boat ramp crammed full. Some ducks flying, teal and ringnecks. We had our chances, 2 and half hours of walking, 2 five yard shots at roosters, and a couple of pointed single quail, after a covey got up wild. girls whiffed on all! To slow on the draw, while walking in the tangle. Saw a total of 6 roosters, 8 hens, 1 covey of 15 or so quail. One rooster barely colored at all, so look sharp. My impression is that it's not as bad as we had feared. Crops are cut except for what they don't intend to cut, extremely thick, hot and dry. Going to be challenging. I was surprised to see roosters running out of field ends 1/4 mile away, this early, with having had no pressure, must be some holdover birds with experience.
