Old roosters are tough, or tough roosters are old?

As I think about the will to live some of these birds have, I often wonder...

Is it the fact that a bird is old and has tougher muscles that makes them shrug off a shot to the body and keep on trucking, or is it because they were a tough son of a gun to begin with, and that allowed them to reach old age? It could be some of each, but which do you think is the prevailing answer?

(yes, I know they don't have combs like that, but AI apparently does not)

Idk, crossed a deep creek 3 times on that hunt. Cleaned him soon as I got home. Couldn’t wait to get out of those boots. If ever there was a bird to hang for a couple days, that was one.

The last pic was for A5. Old birds are lucky birds, maybe they RUN like heck at the first sign of trouble. Running might not be the best choice for them in all situations, but against hunters it is. Maybe they find out of the way roosting/lofting places.

Shot an old bird Saturday, spurs would put yer eye out. Cooked him up with Zatarans that night. We noticed how tuff he was.
I cooked up some Dirty rice and while it was simmering I had chunks of pheasants and diced orange and red peppers frying up in a 1/2 stick of butter. 1 quick grind of seasalt and garlic. When the rice was finished I blended the pheasant in and let it rest for 5 minutes. Awesome!

Took the leftovers and added chicken stock , black beans , and Rotel hatch mix. Great soup.

I think they are really smart.

Not exceptionally long, but pretty much the entire spur has turned white...nice ivory spurs! Shot him Saturday. Last night I made over 12 pounds of breakfast sausage, it included him.

I got an ivory boy like that this year too.

I went to get them to take a picture, but they weren't in my leg pile. Then I remembered, they were shorter, so I guess I didn't save them. I have had white tips before, but not where the whole spur was very white.
