Obedience

In the tread of DakaotaZeb's where he is asking for opinions on NSTRA Trails, I found something lacking in some of the replies. That is "Instant Obedience". I have demanded IO from all my dogs. Before Gunne my new pup, goes afield he too will also be trained for IO. I have hunted with guy's who do not demand IO of their dogs and I find it a pain in the rear. I have to wait while he gets his dog under control. Tony stands there looking at me, like "why is he yelling at his dog so much?" "You don't yell at me"

So does your dog have token training on Obedience? Or does he stop instantly on "Whoa," and "Come" instantly when the commands are given?...........Bob

MD asked. So how would you define instant obedience? I demand that once; the command is given they have less than 5 seconds to get on their horse and respond. In the case of "Whoa" it is NOW, instant stop, one or 2 steps after the brakes are put on, no if and or buts. When they hear the command they better do something quick...........Bob

The reason I ask is I sometimes wonder if I should do more obedience work. If I tell them "whoa" they stop and wait or come back a ways until they are back in good hunting range, don't think that is the technique meaning of whoa. If I tell them "come" they come running back to me. Say "no bird" and they give up chase. I see some guys have dogs they tell them to heal and they will walk by them until released. Some dogs are whistle trained ect. My dogs can't do either of the later. It sure would be nice sometimes if they were trained to that level.

I like them trained to whistle. I feel in the field your voice is lost at times. Tony is trained by me, to 3 styles of command. hand, whistle and voice. If he is a chasing a bird and I want him to stop, I blow whoa on the whistle. Then come/here on the whistle. I will admit it takes a lot of time to train them, but I have the time so I do it..........Bob

Do you mind sharing some of your techniques for teaching this Instant Obience? Seems like my lab is getting out of control at times.

No special skills involved, I just stay on them until they know I mean "now". I don't just teach the command so they know it, I stay with it training until there is no dilly dally involved. They hear it and do it, simple as that........Bob

I wouldn't say my lab is perfect but better then every one I have hunted with. Now all the other labs I have hunted with don't get daily training like I do with mine but I think that right there is the difference. Once a week we go back over all the basic obedience. If I notice an issue while doing another kind of training I will stop and focus on the obedience issue on hand. The hardest one I have with him is the whistle sit while just about to flush a bird. He is perfect until that pheasant is right under his nose. Now everyone has a different idea of a trained dog. I have friends that are happy if they can just find a bird and come back. Then there are people who are even more demanding then I am. In the end if your dog hunts to your expectations and everyone has fun then it is all good.
