Nobody posts on this thread because pheasant hunting sucks especially on the eastern side of the state.
I’ve hunted in Nebraska since 1971 and this year has been the absolute worst.
God this one hits home. I moved from northeast Nebraska to south east Sodak. World of difference. Nebraska game in parks needs a stern talking too

I always wondered why Nebraska wasn't a popular state. I've never hunted there because I've never heard that I needed too.

So what gives? Seems like Nebraska should have everything available to make birds like their northern and southern sisters. Or is it just the best-kept secret going?

Here's some 2024/2025 info about the cornhusker state, conditions, and bird estimates. Doesn't seem like a completely dire situation from this, but what's printed on paper and what actually is happening in the field can vary wildy sometimes. According to this, pheasants are up in every zone except the northeast and quail are up in every zone they are present in.

Hunting was decent in November but December was awful. I think quite a few birds were taken in November where I hunt as in December there were hardly any around, this is SW Nebraska really dry there as almost zero moisture. Nothing like 20 years ago, too much habitat loss many CRP grounds were removed when contracts expired. Sure isn't coming back either.

When you have 2 birds for 10 miles and the count 3 in 10 miles , the number is up but you don’t have many birds. Statistics are misleading.

Well unfortunately when you have the Nebraska Game and Parks paying landowners for the kind of habitat you see here in the background you don’t get much for their money. That is 320 acres of Prime CRP-Map hunting ground.IMG_0304.jpeg

Nebraska has some of the worst walk-in places I have ever seen. I guess anyone can sign up even if your land is barren. Kansas has way better walk in areas if they haven't been cut.

I've hunted Nebraska twice, first time was probably....2019? We had a banner hunt. Almost shot limits of quail and roosters daily all on public ground.

Went back about 2 or 3 years later, same areas, same time of the year and we shot 2 quail in a week. Hardly even pulled my gun off my shoulder. Nebraska also has been hammered with drought the last few years, idk about this year as I've written Nebraska off for awhile until I hear better reports coming out of the state but it always seems to be the same which is that it sucks.

It’s all about the habitat! 2024-25 was the best season I have had in NE Nebraska since the mid 1990s. If you hunt state managed ground, then I suspect poor results. Our CRP plots, drainage ditches and cattail patches all had birds the entire season. I have had to “manage CRP decisions” to keep our bird numbers up with seedlings, burns and food plots .

Why so many birds this year? If the habitat is perfect, you still need moisture in the spring. We had a very wet spring to support a good hatch with abundance of bugs, the key ingredient for chick survival. Then we escaped a major hail storm that can decimate numbers. This combination equates to a strong hatch with high survival rates. Moral of the story is it takes many factors coming together for high bird population so it cannot be expected every year. This will be a season I remember for years to come!

Sounds like you have it figured out, congrats on a successful year. Too bad the state of Nebraska can’t figure it out!
