No burn crp

I was going to go out and help burn off some crp this Spring where I do some hunting. Got a call from the landowner and he said that they took all the burning out of his contracts and he can do some light discing on some of the acreage instead, to promote weed growth for better insects for chick rearing!!!! Are they getting away from burning because of drought or everyone catching other peoples property on fire??? Or what they had planted previously is now obsolete???

I had to do some light disking on habitat this past fall and it really made the hunting bad as it did not recover as well as I had hoped--of course it was really dry and that I sure did not help.

I don't know why they won't let you bail it every 5 years or so. Then use a rake aswell.

On my famed wetlands CRP that is the an option -cut, bail and BURN. You must destroy the bails. This is required at year 6 of 10 year contracts and years 6 & 12 of 15 year contracts. It has been so open this winter with so little snow that I have several large stacks of bails that need to be burned and have not been done yet--its getting late and I need a good 4 inch plus snow to burn it. I guess FSA will let me know what to do with it if we don't get any snow.

They should allow you to donate it too TX or OK farmers that are in desperate need for cattle of feed.

Instead of borrowing the money from china to cost share the baleing and burning they should let the land owner do what he wants and save the money and the carbon that is going into the air. I was told that we need a small carbon foot print. Yes I have a dog in this fight. I have cows that would be happy to destroy the bales for free.

we can't burn either. our pf biologist recommended disking (in the fall to promote weed growth/cool seasons the following spring) on a 5 year rotation. i must admit, the first time i did it, i was more than a little nervous.

it essentially took that section out of the rotation for two falls. the first fall that we disked it it was obviously unhuntable. the following spring it was actually pretty good nesting cover. lots of cool seasons and weeds and the switch started coming back pretty good. by that fall, the weeds had died off and the switch wasn't really thick enough for good cover. the next fall it was an awesome mix and the switch was back solid enough to provide cover into the fall/winter.

going forward, we have our fields set up to disk part of them on a 5 year rotation. if you can't burn, it appears to be the next best thing.
