Newbie in SD this week

Title says it all, newbie in SD this week with my dog chasing pheasant. Staying around Redfield area in a motel, but willing to drive. Have a setter, so mostly looking for CREP lands. Any suggestions welcome, particularly with this weather - if we can even get 2 days of decent hunting and some bird work I would call that a success
I have friends out north of you and they are reporting alot of the grass lands have been matted down by this snow so some of the creps may not be holding birds. I would look for WPA's and GMA's as they often have better grass and some shelterbelts, don't forget to look WIA's as well some in Edmunds county looked very promising. Other wise walk the perimiter of cattails for grass land next to the crops.

Sorry just realized this was from last Tuesday, you are probably already home.

I am home, but appreciate the response.

Yeah, this was our first time hunting wild pheasant. It seems like the high winds and snow on Tuesday really moved a lot of birds and laid down a lot of grass. We still saw a ton of birds everywhere we went, but they seemed very spooky - flushing 200-300 yards out most places. Took me a day to really figure out what kind of habitat and snow cover I needed to look for, but you basically described it. However, cattail edges were not producing - I think they were way back in there. For her part, when I put the dog in the right habitat, she found birds and pointed strong and the birds held. I just couldn't shoot, but we'll be back
