Good cold morning to all. I'm a long time lurker but just registered newbie here from North Carolina. Me and several friends hunt western Kansas every few years, although because of the drought, we haven't been since 2009. Enjoy reading the posts and viewing the pics. Hope to get back out there soon.

Hey, the first time we were out there we hunted from Oberlin to Norton, with a little foray into McCook, Nebraska. The last two times we have been we stayed in WaKeeney, south of you on 283. Mostly hunted between WaKeeney and Hill City.

Welcome Chuck!
Great to see another Carolinian here on the site:cheers:
We make an annual pilgrimage out to north central Kansas every year, drought or no drought; always more birds than we would ever see around here:rolleyes:
Cheers,
Wolf

I know exactly where you are talking about. I am just a few miles away. My wife worked in Norton for a while. Lots of ground there I could hunt but never have. Birds were really good the first few years here. The last 2 were terrible. Numbers are better this year especially quail which is what I prefer. I a friend out here just before Christmas and we had four great days. Stayed in birds and had great dog work.

Thanks wolfcreeknc!

I haven't bird hunted in NC in several years. My dad and I hunted quail and grouse back in the day, but the lack of farming and loss of habitat to development has all but put an end to bird hunting here.

Deer hunting is pretty good, and we enjoy coastal fishing quite a bit.

Good to hear that things may be improving. I'm currently out of dogs (have had setters and brittanies), and when we have gone in the past we have usually just walked birds up. Currently thinking about a boykin spaniel for flushing and retrieving, and they are good on ducks in small water.

Maybe we can hunt together the next time my crew is able to get out in that direction.

I hunt Brittany's out of John Edwards' line out of Goldsboro NC. I have four now and will probably breed next year sometime because three are getting some age on them. Give me a shout if ever out this way.

I've known several Brittany's from that line.

Thanks and we shall give you a shout if we get out that way.
