New dogs, new here

We just got our 13 mo old GSP through her NAVHDA NA test. I have an RV and am heading to N Texas in search of quail and Pheasants for Christmas week. I am looking for public land options that have produced at least 5-10 coveys. Not looking for exact PINs, just reports from this year where I would get the best opportunities to get my GSP and Weim live bird experiences. I wouldn't not pass on non-resident OK areas but would prefer to find fertile ground that my Texas APH will get me.

Very bold first post.

Congrats on the new pup and NA test. Bird hunting spots are hard-earned in this day and time. Part of the beauty in finding and killing the birds is having put in the leg work to make all the parts come together. It sounds like you have already started that journey in getting a dog ready for its first year afield. I wish you well.
Perhaps you have some questions on what habitat to look for or maybe some tips on hunting tactics? That might go a touch further toward your success.

Very nice response and 100% true.

Thanks everyone. I am heading to Drummond WMA Wed. I know to look for edge but really haven’t ever hunted public for birds. I learned more about deer hunting hunting public back I the nineties but I had much more time when I was self employed.
Any suggestions of what to look for on onX I would gladly dive into scouting.

I don’t mind working for it but the goal is not for me, it’s to take the dogs in this critical development window. I am hoping I get some birds to help the dogs start to put it all together.

Skydiver,
Check out my posts on the Oklahoma site. I've hunted pheasant and quail for nearly 15 years at Drummond. 3 years ago I hunted 20 times taking 4 roosters, last year 15 times w/one rooster, this year so far 10 times w/2 roosters shot and 5 quail.
Find a spot that has a few trees and fence lines, good place to start. Since it is flat the walking is fairly easy. I've hunted all parts of Drummond with the best spots further south. If you want you can call me at (580) 614-1372. Quite foggy today, you will need waterproof boots. The pheasant population is not good but w/diligence you can scratch out one. Also, I the Quail population is only fair, although I have seen more coveys this year than any year that I have hunted Drummond. Over 5,000 acres to hunt. Check out the map on the net it will help you navigate the area. You can park anywhere along the roads as long as you pull over. There is also designated parking in several areas. When you arrive drive the area first so you can get a feel for it. Good luck & call me if if you want.
Merry Christmas

Thanks Monte, I will keep your number handy. I didn’t realize that this wma was managed as a waterfowl preserve. My first thing tomorrow is going to be to head to academy to get non-toxic shot shells.
I have never hunted quail with non-toxic shot. What do y’all recommend?

Due to lack of non-lead shotgun shells due t Christmas, I am looking to hunt Sandhills WMA instead for Thursday.

Where can I pickup some bismuth shot shells in Enid?
